Full or almost full stack; that's the question...

Post by Bensnake » Thu Nov 07, 2013 11:02 pm

Back in the 80's and the early 90's, I was totally lost in that Lukather thing with 2 cabs in a stereo config, a massive rack unit system with a separate preamp, power amp and lots of effects running through a Rane SM-26 splitter/mixer in between. That's the closest thing I've been to a full stack setup, the cabs side by side though and in stereo, not mono.

Now I consider fulfilling a full stack dream that I've thought about for a while.

An alternative would be to go for an extra 212 instead of a 412. Looks cool and I've seen a couple of guys running that config.

What do you fellow Orange lovers think? Pros and cons with either options?

I'm not out on the road anymore so moving the damn thing isn't an issue.

I saw a picture online many years ago of a someone's two "3/4" stacks, one in orange and one in black, with the 412 on top of the 212. Looked incredible. You should do that. :D

When using two cabs with different speaker config, each speaker in the 212 will get twice as much power as each speaker in the 412, right? Will the 212 cab then sound... sort of louder? :? Or am I wrong here? Andy?

There's not much benefit and you'll get more volume from the 212 than the 412. I used to run a similar setup for a long time. I eventually realized it was unnecessary and offered no benefit other than looking damn cool.

What, is this for home use? Thats nearly as bad as me with a (compact but real) 500W bass rig in the corner of my living room most weeks!

Well (assuming they are both the standard 16 ohms each cab will take the same power. Yes each driver in the 2x12 will take double the amount of each driver in the 4x12, so be individually louder. But the cabs will still be roughly equally loud. (The 4x12 may perhaps be a couple of dB louder overall, but thats a pretty marginal difference. The combined sensitivity of the two cabs together will be higher than either alone.)

Unless using it in a loud live situation I don't see much need to go that way. Only really be for the visuals...

Well, I know this is important and all, so the 4x12 needs be on the bottom w 4x25 watt greenbacks, ok ok, now the 2x12 can take those 2 v30's. Set that right on top. This tends to happen when 8ohm speakers somehow got out of place. It's just right like that when it happens.

I went for the 6X12. I figured it would be handy to have a smaller cab (if i ever needed it) for smaller gigs/different tones. After getting the PPC212 I kind of wish I picked up two of those instead. The sound is way more punchy and powerful. You don't get the massive bass response like you do from the PPC412 but I still prefer the sound.

Thanks! How do they work together? Are you experiencing any differences in volume between the cabs? Does it sound better when driving both cabs combined compared to running either alone?

I think the volume is roughly the same.

AFAIK the wattage is split evenly between the two cabs (not positive). they work great together. The PPC412 is on the bottom and brings the lowmid/bass frequencies. The PPC212 on top brings that midrange punch. Plus it is at ear level so you can really hear yourself on stage/practice (since the sound isn't totally destroying the back of your legs). It defiantly sounds better running both cabs together. The sound is fuller, and it is closer to ear level.
