On a somewhat related note, is it true that there were two types of Orange 4-12 cabs in the early 70s? The ones for the domestic (UK) market which were loaded with Celestions, and the export cabs for the US market which were shipped unloaded, then loaded with Eminences by the US distributor. Does anybody know when this practice started, and if the cabs were constructed differently?

The first shipments of Orange cabinets to the U.S. came loaded with Celestion speakers . After that they were shipped unloaded to save on shipping costs. At Musonics , in Des Plaines Illinois, they were loaded with square back Eminence speakers. Musonics was the distributor of the original run of Orange products. The Musonics schematic is dated Jan 10, 1974. I do not know how much earlier US distribution began. I have friends who were there at the time, I will ask them if the remember any more details.
The 80 and 120 watt versions all had the same 100 watt output transformers. The 80 simply had two less output tubes. The OR series was the addition of a master volume control.

Those Eminence speakers were actually pretty good. I have 2 4X12's and I reloaded one of them with Celestion Vintage 30's and I was struck by the fact that they weren't a huge improvment over the Eminence except for volume. Well, maybe a bit better but the Eminence can really hold their own.
