With my tung sol 12ax7 doing dirty channel duties, even with gain turned way down, it ain't warm, glassy and clean, has anyone tried a 12at7 for dirt channel and did you find it really cleaned things up or not ?

Try a 5751. Not as much gain as a 12AX7, more musical than a 12AT7. You might try different power tubes as well.

My Rockerverb 100 mk3 has 6 preamp tubes total:

12AX7's: 1 for stages 1&2 clean chan., 1 for stages 1&2 dirty chan., 1 for stages 3&4 dirty, 1 for phase inverter.

12AT7's: 1 for FX loop, 1 for reverb

So I'm assuming they used 12AT7's in those two spots because they are cleaner and less prone to overdrive. So you probably wouldn't want to use one for a dirty channel in an amp unless you're looking to limit the overdrive and clean it up a bit.
