Which Celestion G12H in a PPC212?

Post by erogers » Tue Dec 24, 2019 6:13 am

I'm kindly asking for feedback on which Celestion Heritage G12H (55 Hz or 75 Hz) speaker I should use in a PPC212 closed-back cabinet with my Orange Dual Dark 50? Contrary to what a lot of people think about this amp, it can do it all, from metal to classic rock, so I would like to try these mainstays of classic rock in one of my PPC212 cabs. I see that early on (early-to-mid 1970s), Orange put the G12H 75 Hz version in some of their cabs, so I'm leaning toward those, but would love to hear if using the 55 Hz versions would be better, or perhaps I should mix one of each? Any input would be appreciated! Thank you.

Now that I'm thinking about it, would the G12H Anniversary model have anything better to offer than either of the two Heritage G12H models (each on its own or mixed)?

The Anniversaries have their devotees but my experience was not to my taste.

I had a G12H30 55Hz quad in a Marshall TV cab and they took a long time to break in (to put this into perspective I have two 70s Orange 4x12s and three Marshall 4x12s. Two cabs have the Hs with T1217 (75Hz speakers) one has the 55Hz and two have M speakers (T1221 75Hz and T1511 55Hz) all with original pulsonic cones. I mix the speakers in two of the Marshalls to have x pattern 75 and 55 and they work very well.
So you may see why I voted for x1 of each speaker type. They both have the same sensitivity but having the resonant peak at different fequencies helps even the response and avoids the twin beam effect with phase cancellation etc.

Thanks for your input! I admit I don't know very much about the technical aspects of speakers, i.e. resonant frequencies, twin beam effect, phase cancellation, etc. Are you saying that having a mix of both the 55 Hz and 75 Hz models would actually enhance the tone of the cab, versus two of the same speaker perhaps cancelling out some tonal characteristics of the speakers?

Personally speaking I would go for the mix. You will find some boutique amp/builders go further and mix an H and an M in the same cab but I have not done this myself as they have quite different sensitivities (100dB and 96dB respectively). You could also consider the Creambacks, if I were considering a single cab to gig with I would be looking hard at the Neo-creambacks as they are much lighter to lug around. YMMV!
