Orange Amp choice

Post by pascalgra » Sat Apr 13, 2019 1:11 pm

Hi,
I have an orange th30c, I add sometimes an ppc 112 cab
I would like change this Amp because is too loud
The maximum volume I use is 2 or 3 and I am enough loud with drummer etc
I only use clean channel
I look for an Amp who is very good with pedals who have a good clean like my th30c and not too loud for use at volume 5 or 6
I don't need drive channel only clean
What orange Amp is best for me?
Thanks
Pascal

Tremlord 30 sounds like it was built for you.

I think the tremlord and the th30c are not very different
30 watt is too much, as I said I never put the volume knob after 2 or 3 with my band and it is very loud for me and other musicians
I can't use all the power of the amp

I would like something more lighter

Fender Blues Jr. Amazing cleans and no dirt. Plays well with pedals. Not sure if I would go Orange if I wasn't going to use dirt. Like buying a Ferrari just to go to the grocery store.

Another option could be an OR15. At low gain settings I absolutely love it for the clean tone with my strat. You could also replace the 12AX7s with 12AT7s to lower the gain even more if needed.

I don’t know what would be lighter than a 1x12 combo unless you go solid state (crush series) to shave off 5-10 lbs. A head is obviously lighter, but then you still need a cab. Rocker 15 combo might suit you, but no eq on the natural channel if you can live with that sound, but it sounds best cranked. Dirty channel can can clean up and sound very nice clean. I don’t like the single 10” VOTW speaker in that amp though, small cab needs an excellent speaker. The R15 and Tremlord both feature a “bedroom” setting that bring it down to 4 or 1 watt.
Theres plenty of options out there, but I’m assuming your looking for an Orange option.

If your looking for a pedal friendly Orange, that's pretty much what the Orange Rocker 15 and 32 were made for.
The Rocker 15 Combo is my third try at an Orange amp to go with my pedal board, previously had a TT Combo and an OR15 head with a Fryette 2x12. Set clean, those other two were nice, but each interacted differently with my pedals, especially the amp in a box type pedals, adding their own bit of eq into the mix. Whereas, the Natural Channel sounds great alone, but also lets the chosen pedal do it's thing without adding unwanted mids, highs or lows.
And a ginormous bonus is you also have the Orange Dirt channel to switch over to for added variety. On the single channel amps, going from pedal tones to the Orange sound took some knob turning on the amp.
If stereo is your thing, the Rocker 32. I don't use my Mobius in stereo, I love the pre/post set up on that with the effects loop in the Rocker 15.

The 7 watts setting as same overall volume just a little less bass and I don't like this sound
I would like have a separated head
That I can use at volume minimum 5 with good sound
At volume 2/3 with the th30 all people tell me I'm too loud
A head with good clean
I don't like the drive channel it's good 5 min after I find the sound sterile and too loud

Yep the power scaling issue sounds normal with Orange amps

Sterile? OK so it's sounds like a classic example of using a valve amplifier thats too powerful for the volume your using it at and the amp just isn't getting turned up enough.

The rocker 15 terror might be worth a try, you can use the natural channel is very good with pedals and sounds nice and you might even get to like the dirty channel which is voiced more classic than the th30.

I'd also check out one of the solid state heads as suggested above which may be better for the volumes you play at.

The rocker 15 terror could be a good choice but the clean channel is clean at all volume?

No.

At max volume, you will get power valves overdrive. However, with a single gain stage, it's one of the cleanest Orange around.

I think you should view your problem from a different angle.

Do you like the tone of your TH30 clean channel between 1 and 3?
If so, keep it, and keep playing it at low volume.

I have, 5w, 15w, 7/15/30w, 30w and 50w amps. My 50w amp is one of the best in terms of clean tones. 15w can get a little dirty too fast, 30w and 50w stays clean and sounds great even at lower volume.

I'm happy to play my 50w between 1 and 2. They sound better louder..... but still sound great at that volume. What's the problem?

You have a great sound and can be louder if needed. Looks like you have a good clean amp there.

No valve amp is clean at max volume. A 100 watts amp wont be clean at max volume. The things is you are more likely to put a 15 watts at max volume then a 100 watts amp.

IMHO, the Rocker 15 is what you want. You can had a EQ pedal if you want more flexibily with the Natural channel

If you like the tone of the TH30 clean channel, and do not need the dirty channel then the Rocker 15 is simply NOT an option.

The tone of the clean (natural) channel of the Rocker series flat out pales in comparison to the TH30 and requires an external EQ to come close.

The Fender Blues Jr, also mentioned, while a pleasant all around amp is boxy with a very middy sound and frankly is simply not good as a clean platform.

Both these amps are a large step back in clean tone from the TH30.. and tbh if total weight is the issue then why not a TH30c and have it set to 7.5W setting?.

Options from Orange would be (imo) an AD15 combo, or an AD30 head plus 112 cab (AD30 has little headroom but is good for cleans at low-moderate volume)

For stellar clean tones in the similar price range of TH30+ cab I would go for the Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue (and i did..lol)
