Custom Hyperion Mothership Cabinet

Post by Hyperion » Mon Mar 04, 2019 5:47 am

So, I've been playing around with building custom cabs ever once and a while for people. This idea came to me from a customer...after almost a month of design, prototyping, testing, trial and error, it's all come toghether quite nicely.

It's an oversized 55cm(w) x 45cm (H) x 35cm (D) cab, constructed from 18mm baltic birch ply. All construction is made with rebate corners, similar to how an acoustic guitar goes together. Wrapped in a nice heavy Orange Style black vintage basketweave. finished with black hardware, including flight case style handles.

The amp slides into a custom tray made from 1mm steel (laser cut and bent), custom 3d printed runners and some foam gaskets proide a snug and vibration free fit, and the cutaways provide good ventilation througout. The amp handle is replaced with a "folding" design that allows it to stow away behnid the panel in a small route.

The functionality of the Amp is maintained with a pass-through plate on the back for power and the FX loop. You can also un-dock the amp and then connect the speaker to one of the FX loop input jacks with a male-to-male adapter to allow the cab to be used stand-alone as a quite unconventional "open back" design.

It really sounded great, both with a Celestion G12T-75 and a WGS G12c/s (which happened to also be orange coloured. I was quite heart-broken to see this one go out the door, and will definitely make one for myself one day.

Appreciate any feedback and ideas on how to improve the next one.

Looks great, nice job! I like the idea of the jack plate for the power and effects loop. Maybe next one add a second pkate to make use of an extension cab?

Great work.

Really neat idea. Does the amp get hot at all with the limited air flow?

I would look to include some grill on the bottom of the back panel to increase the air flow.

I love the concept.

looks killer. i've thought about doing something like that with my micro dark and micro terror. got too many projects as is.

i'd like to know about venting too.

regardless it looks great and very well executed.

Thanks! Really doesnt get hot at all...I tested the amp, reamping a guitar track through it for a few hours at very high gain / high volume and the dang thing wasnt even that warm. This is better, in my opinion, than the Tiny Terror Combo, which has no vents around the amp, only the "open back" design allowing circulation below. That's a much smaller cab than this one, so there should be plenty of circulation.

I'm building another for a Brent Hinds Terror, which I'm currently testing for the same....it's barely warm to the touch on Full 15w settings, and Vol / Gain at 3 o'clock. While it's not warm, it is loud!! Thank god I've got a Freyette to Attenuate the output basically to nothing :)

The cab looks great! I really love the black nameplate on the front.

For Orange amps, Orange tolex, wheat grill cloth (or whatever it is...) and a white nameplate would look pretty cool. Maybe?
