Tubes for RV50 MK1

Post by lvmuthearth » Sun Feb 24, 2019 6:10 pm

Hi, what are my options for retubing? I have to stay with the 6V6, but are there major tone variations between different brands? I play metal, from classic Sab to Megadeth and Slayer. Thanks!
Peace, and disturbance thereof,

rockerverbed head

You can use two EL34’s if you want to experiment. I’ve never really heard of different brands being better for certain styles.

One thing to bear in mind, Ade Emsley designed the RV50 MKI around the JJ 6V6s.

It's the most robust, reliable, and one of the best sounding modern 6V6.

I at one point had switched to the Tung Sols in mine, and I never looked back, that's how good they were.

You can use two EL34's in a Rockerverb 50 MKI? If so, do you just insert them in the two inner or two outer power tube slots? And do you need to re-bias? Will this make it sound more like a Rocker 30?

I find the 6V6 tubes in my RV50 sort of grainy/clacky on the dirty channel....much prefer the Rocker 30 dirty channel with EL34s. Would love to know if I can get that tone out of my RV50!

Yes, inner or outer. Needs rebiasing and it won’t make it sound like a Rocker 30. Preamps are fairly different, and the Rocker 30 is Cathode biased. Theres an old thread in the depths of the forum when Ade Emsley the designer who used to post, mentions two EL34’s can be used in the amp with re-biasing..

For what it's worth.... a number of user did try it, but I think all came back to 6V6s.
