What does "Proto" mean in a serial?

Maybe someone can help you date your Orange Amplifier?

What does "Proto" mean in a serial?

Post by MoKit » Sun Oct 07, 2018 7:51 pm

Chris here, new to the forum, been playing Orange for 2 years which also as long as I have played six string, anyways own 3 Orange amps, love them all. Most recent purchase is this mid 2010 TH30, love it, beautiful Chinese-built Orange, buttery overdriven awesomeness, or with the clean channel a smooth foundation to build upon.

So, the serial has me questioning. It is labeled "Proto•02•0610", what does proto mean? All the newer TH30's I have seen, the serial will say (only an example) "0234•1018" with no letters attached at all. So would this have any significance? I will link below a photo of the front and the back of the amp. Note, it also has the older style knobs, which I actually prefer.

Cool find!

Looks like you have a prototype of the TH30 - not sure how it got out there, but there it is!

Thanks Billy,

I figured that's what it was, but I would hate assuming and get told different. So, if I remember my research right, the TH30 was released in 2010. Now I'm curious if the first batch was possibly in June? If so would this be possibly #02? Dude that would be sick. Either way I would love this amp, it is awesome.

Thanks,

The serial number would indicate the second prototype from June 2010... very cool, indeed!

Cracked it open. It is PCB, board is dated 02-02-2010. Added internal pictures to the link I already shared.
