Orange Hustler in amazing shape

Post by Jondog » Fri Aug 03, 2018 10:43 pm

https://reverb.com/item/14205242-orange ... 70s-orange
Just came across this on Reverb, thought I’d share because they don’t come up often. The ones I usually see are missing knobs or have ruined tolex.

That is cool. They are advertising it as early 70s though and it's really like a 1979 series two orange. I let the seller know. haha.

Wow, that's in nice condition and with a road case!

But local pickup only? - he could just throw that in the road case and ship it without a box!

Nice! How do you like it?

It’s super clean. There can’t be many like that around.

I’ve only had a few moments with it so far. It’s a little nasaly at the moment. It’s not like an OR80, because of the gain structure, the contour control (which is a lot different from the FAC), the open back combo configuration, and maybe some dirty pots affecting EQ settings. I’m going to take it apart, clean it, photograph it some more, and tube it up. I might have to defeat the contour control to make it sound better. It is a mean sounding machine, but not what I’m used to yet.

As for the “deal.” I think I got pretty lucky. Seller listed it as “local pickup only,” but he didn’t mean to. No one was biting on the line presumably because they didn’t want to go to Calgary to pick it up. So, it sat for a while and the seller dropped the price. Twice. When I contacted him asking about how to set up a local pickup since I was going to be in Calgary, he said he’d just ship it if I wanted, so i just took that option. He shipped it in the road case, and it showed up in fine shape.

Caps look original. It’s not making any noise, so I’ll most likely keep them. Power tubes are JJs, so someone has been maintaining it. I have no idea what the speaker is, but it sounds fine.

Part of that contour circuit generates nasty blocking distortion like a 2-input Hiwatt with the input gain up too high, so I’m not going to use that setting much.
