That's really cool!
Optical pickups is not something new, more than 10 years ago, a french guy tried to launch some on the market, making some Bass pickups under the "Optomik" brand. It was very expensive (600 euro for a 4 string pickup) and did not reached success.

Very cool.

I'm wondering if that would work on a poorly lit stage? How much light does it actually need???

They've got a very few videos on thw8r website.

The steel stringed strat isn't as convincing as with the nylon strings.

It isn’t really new. Lightwave pickups have been used for quite a few years on some Sei and Zon basses among others. I’m pretty sure they have been around for rather longer than 10 years. This looks to be a similar idea.

@ LPL: It isn’t dependant on ambient light. There are small LEDs and sensors for each string.

Must have taken some tweaking to that Strat - nylon strings have much lower string tension.

I’ve had a (roughly) Strat shaped solid bodied nylon string guitar for many years now. Have mentioned my Marleaux Nyelectric before here - still my very favourite guitar in fact. Bit surprising that there haven’t been more guitars along those lines over the years, can only think of Godin, Aria and Fernandes who have done anything even vaguely similar. Gerald Marleaux told me they’d only made about 10 of the Nyelectrics...

It's interesting to me, but I don't think it's cool. There are so many good acoustics with nylon strings out there that to spend that much time to get a Strat to be nylon strung just seems pointless....

I understand that. I’m talking more about the technology, optical pickups. It sounds really good.

The main point is that without this type of research, there's no progress.

I agree- I have played electric type guitars with nylon strings before, and love the ergonomy of the electric and the classical sound combined. Nothing new there, and great concept all the same.

I must say, the other recordings for non nylon strings they have leave me totally non plussed.
