Crush 20 or MICRO DARK Terror?

Post by Cam977 » Sun Dec 31, 2017 4:15 pm

Hey guys, so my Crush 12 died on me and I need an upgrade. I bought an ID Core 20 but the background noise was too intrusive so it's being sent back and I plan to return to Orange. However, I have the choice of the Crush 20W or a Micro Dark terror and a 1x8 cab.
Which should I go for?

I'm a home player, and recording through these amps is particularly important to me.

Get a Micro Dark and PPC112 cab. It's both home-friendly and band-jam-ready setup.

Honestly, tone you can get from Micro Dark at bedroom level is quite astonishing. Plus it has an effects loop and CabSim headphone output which might be helpful if you record a lot. As I mentioned, apart from home you can literally gig with it, just needs a bigger cabinet then.

Avoid the ppc108 if you go MD. I've almost sold my MD off about 3 times and then I play it through other cabs and keep it. The ppc108 is very cute but that's it.

Micro Dark with some sort of 112.

The PPC112 is well made, high quality, with a great speaker. But compact cabs like that are a little boxy sounding, and it's pretty expensive.

Hate to say it on the Orange Forum but you can get better sounding 112's for less money. Especially used.

And even a cheap Crate or B52 or whatever 112 will sound better than the PPC108.

Super low budget cab that can sound really great -- look for a non-working solid state 112 combo amp on Craigslist. Rig up a jack so you can bypass the electronics and plug the Micro Dark directly to the speaker. You can do that for under $40, leaving you room to upgrade the speaker if you want.

micro dark for sure. the 1x8 cab is good for what it is. but like said earlier it is boxy sounding and doesn't compare to a good 1x12. i don't know where you are but thomann has harley benton 1x12's with a celestion vintage 30 for about $20 more than the price of the orange ppc108. you can't get new vintage 30's cheaper than the harley benton cabs.

i am not sure. i know they deal in volume. since it's harley benton they probably buy a ton of the v30's and make the cabs for them. maybe the cabs are just regular plywood and not birch.

but i wish i had known about them earlier this year.

glenn fricker seems to like them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXU74KWwmMI
and henning likes them as well it seems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHeeGMSBZ-g

they also have harley benton 2x12's and 4x12's loaded with v30's that are crazy bargains as well. the angled 4x12 they have runs $400 usd and the straight cab they have runs $389 usd. i plan on getting at least one of the 4x12 cabs soon just to get the v30's!
