Boosting the dirty channel?
Hello guys!
I have a TH30 and I really love it. Clean channel is wonderful as well as the crunch distortion on the dirty one.
Now I'd like to find a way to obtain a third sound, a lead for solos, without using OD or distortion pedals (they make one of the warmest amps brand sounding "cold", in my personal opinion) or guitar's volume knob. At first I thought about MXR micro amp on the clean channel to get a crunch sound, using and setting the dirty channel for solos. Or, in alternative, placing the pedal in the FX loop, directly boosting the dirty channel's volume, as in the last part of this video (from 7.35): https://youtu.be/j6kxXWW7O8w
If the second one worked I would definitely choose that solution, but I honestly can't hear a big volume boost. At least not enough for a solo. Any other solution?
Thank you!

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
There is a nice but very expansive solution...
The Bax Bangeetar!
Can do subltle changes in my TH30 tone, or work like a 3rd Channel.
And for me it boosts very nice too.
All depending where I place it (front or loop).
IMHO they should sell the TH30 in a bundle pack with this pedal.
The only negative thing is again THE HUGE PRICE.
But I see it as one of the best investment you can make.

Without using pedals or the volume knob, there's not much you can do unless you can pick very very lightly and make it sound good, which is impractical. Also depends what you're trying to achieve, more gain, more volume, different tone/EQ, combination of, etc...Van Gogh wrote: Now I'd like to find a way to obtain a third sound, a lead for solos, without using OD or distortion pedals (they make one of the warmest amps brand sounding "cold", in my personal opinion) or guitar's volume knob.
Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
How about trying do get a third tone using an eq pedal. I have a JoYo Fish n' Chips eq pedal. It could be used to reshape the clean tone or the gain tone and set the pedal volume to higher than parity and see what you
can find.

I also play a TH30 in my smaller rig. The thing is a beast but I have encountered exactly what you are describing. What I have found works best is cheating a little. I use my old 10 band and leave the eq flat but pull back the volume slider so I cut some volume from my amp. Then I adjust the volume on the amp to match up with everyone else in the band and when I do a solo, I kick off the 10 band and let the amp do its thing.
I would assume you could use other pedals than just a 10 band. I also have the strymon ob1 and I am tempted to try it with that but haven't gotten around to it.

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
I think that you'll get problems on the clean channel. Boosting will give you more volume but no crunch sound. Why not choosing a mild and warm od pedal?
For example a Hotone Blues works fine with clean and crunchy channels.

Boosting the clean can breakup into crunch.skerwo wrote:I think that you'll get problems on the clean channel. Boosting will give you more volume but no crunch sound. Why not choosing a mild and warm od pedal?

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
I'm not a th30 owner but from the Orange amps I've owned how much boost you get from the dirty channel will depend on a) how loud your playing and b) how much preamp gain your using. The lower the preamp gain the more volume boost you'll ge
Experimentation is the key , ld try a boost pedal going into the front to boost the dirty channel or set up an overdrive pedal on the clean channel to provide solo volume.
Also I'd set your preamp gain for as little as you can get away with then your more likely to get a volume boost.
Using a boost through the effects loop never worked for me while there was plenty volume the sound was much cleaner.
Enjoy!l

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
I'm gonna suggest putting a MXR 10 band eq in your fx loop, this pedal has a gain and volume slider so you can boost both to get a good lead tone.

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
When I owned a TH30 I boosted it with an EQ-pedal in front of the amp. It had a slider for volume that I pushed quite hard and I put the rest of the EQ as "pig nose" with the the mids really boosted. It worked really well for me. At some point I sold the amp as well as that pedal and nowadays I have an EHX East River Drive as a boost/overdrive for my Rockverb MK 1.

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
I use an Archer and a Wampler Euphoria going in the front of the amp. Works on the clean or dirty channel and will give you either a clean boost or some dirt if you wish. Both pedals will get very loud if you don't have the amp at full blast already. They don't sound cold to my ears.
Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
i know you don't wish to use an OD pedal, but one in the loop with some little gain/dirt would give you exactly what you are looking for.. add volume for lead, and the eq on OD pedals (mostly a 1kHz hump) is perfect for cutting through the mix.

Re: Boosting the dirty channel?
TC Spark boost (full sized, four knob version) in the effects loop will do exactly what you want as a lead boost on the dirty channel. Its very transparent and has some nice tone shaping controls, relatively cheap too. It works wonders for my Dual Dark 50.

After reading my last post I remembered this:

Not that expansive and I bet your TH30's sound could benefit from one those.
I'm still tempted to buy the Two Stroke....
