Uses for Cabsim-loaded headphone out

Post by ptmartins » Tue Oct 04, 2016 11:29 am

Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting here. I recently got an Orange Crush Bass 50, which I love. I am a bit sad about it not having a balanced DI out, though (I already knew only the 100 comes with this feature). So I started wondering about how good the cabsim-loaded headphone out is. I guess the best way to tell is to try, which I have, but I would still like to hear an expert opinion on whether this is technically a good option for:

1) recording straight into an audio interface?
2) sending to PA in a live situation?

Basically, my question is: is the difference between a cabsim-loaded headphone out and a DI out the fact one is balanced and the other is not (at least in this series), or is there something else that would make the headphone out a subpar source?

Thanks!

The headphone out with cab-sim should be fine for home recording.
The trouble with using a headphone out in a live situation is that whenever you plug something into the headphone socket the amp speaker is disconnected, so the amp itself is quiet.

The Crush Bass 50 also has a line output. You could use this to go straight into a mixing desk.

Yes; I guess live a DI would make more sense than a muted amp...
But good to know it's good for home recording.

Also, just to clarify: the Crush Bass 50 does not have a line out. The Crush Bass 100 is the only one in this series that offers that feature.

Arrgh, that's really annoying, because the CRUSH PIX CR50BXT bass amp does! Forgive me.

Tell me about it... it's definitely a way of making you go for the 100 if you're undecided and really want a di out... on the other hand, it has an fx loop, which I could well do without :D
