Shredders: Best Pick for Sweeping
Hello All,
I currently use the Dunlop Jazz IIIs. They are relatively small, but heavy, and it works amazing for alternate and tremelo picking. I recently got into sweep picking, and they work fine, but would a bigger pick work better. What do all you shredders use for sweep picking?
P.S If anyone uses Rob Chapman plectrum gravity picks please enlighten me

Re: Shredders: Best Pick for Sweeping
it always seemed to me the dunlop nylon jazz III picks have a tendency to "catch" the strings instead of smoothly picking through them. i prefer the tortex jazz picks as they seem to glide over the strings better. i had been using the dunlop tortex jazz h3's forever. early last year i swapped over to the dunlop tortex jazz III 1.5mm picks. big difference and i liked them better. by chance earlier this year i found a local company to me that makes custom string sets and offers a subscription service. i was looking for a skinny top heavy bottom set with a wound g string. anyways they also offer their own jazz 1.5mm picks. i bought some on a lark and tried them. i am in love. i dunno where you are at but the website is here ..... http://www.stringjoy.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . i've tried A LOT of different jazz picks over the years and i really like these the best. i can't speak to the gravity picks.
Re: Shredders: Best Pick for Sweeping
Try some V-Picks, they are expensive but since I tried I didn't use any others.
I use The Mummy and The Screamer most of the time.
And the last one I bought was The Freakishly Large, works good too.
I think the Screamer could work for you!

I love the big triangular green Dunlop ones.
Not particularly for sweeping or anything.... In fact my technic is rather substandard, and I like them because if they turn between my fingers whilst I'm ham fisting my way through a song, the next triangle tip isn't far away......

I use a ChickenPicks Bermuda III. I don't shred myself however they are widely used by guys who do. I just seem to have started liking thicker picks.

I started using the Jazz IIIs after a Bonamassa interview I saw. Favorite pick ever. Took me 30+ to discover it!

I'm not much of a sweep picker, but I do really like the jazz III xl. If you like that pick except for the small size, as was the case for me, the XL ones are great!Chuck Ghad wrote:Thanks guys! I might try out some jazz III xl's. I've heard good stuff about the V picks too

I prefer the dunlop 2mm stubby made from lexan since I don't like the tone, or the feel on the strings of nylon.

Re: Shredders: Best Pick for Sweeping
The fastest style Jazz pick is the John Petrucci sig pick. It's basically a Jazz III but has a custom tip on it that allows you to pick super fast and no string drag/friction at all. It's actually so slick it almost takes some feel away from playing, but you may enjoy it. It's awesome for fast playing or sweeping.
It's probably 20% bigger than a Jazz III but if you don't like it you can sand the top down to match the size of the Jazz III. It's really durable too and takes forever to wear out.

Re: Shredders: Best Pick for Sweeping
I am interested to try out the chicken picks and the petrucci sigs. I recently got Tortex Sharp and Ultex 1.14m which both worked amazing as well.

Re: Shredders: Best Pick for Sweeping
remember the Stylus Pick?
it was a good concept... I couldn't get used to them, but gave me the idea to file down a Big (3mm) Stubby into Jazz Stubby shape. that works really good for the frictionless thing only problem then is losing the pick and wear/replacement (takes too much time filing)... I gave up and just bought a cabinet full of jazz stubbys LOL
