Hello and happy new year!
Unfortunately I'm having problems with my OR15 + PPC112. When I'm playing I'm getting a lot of hum/buzz. It has the tube replaced 2 days ago and when I went to the technician, he had my OR15 plugged in a 4x12 and it was buzzing a little. Now, I know that there's a bit of buzz in all OR15, but when I'm playing at home or rehearsal room I get a LOT of buzzing.
Here you can hear the buzz at home. In rehearsal room is even worst.

Do you have an idea of what can be the problem? I've tried to change guitar and cables but nothing changed. Could be possible that the problem is the cab? (In rehearsal room I don't use my PPC112)
Eventually, it's still on warranty, so I can take everything (head + cab) were I bought it.

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Did the amp hum before the tubes were replaced? If not, I would say the tubes are bad or the technician is bad.
Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Yes, the amp was humming before the tubes were replaced. But when I went to the technician, he let me try the amp and the hum was "normal". At home is too much.
Maybe he was using an expensive speaker cable? But this is strange because when I bought the amp is wasn't hum like now.
Could be my guitar?

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Sorry. I replied in the other thread before spotting this one.
Do you know which tubes got replace? Was it all of them? Have you tried using different power outlets in your studio or house? I bought a new amp and it had 50Hz hum in my house and it drove me crazy, then I plugged it straight into the wall rather than a power strip and it was fine. Your hum doesn't sound like a grounding problem. Also, if all the tubes got replaced then the hum balance should also have been checked.

Thanks for you're reply, I've read you're response in the other thread. The technician replaced the 2 power tubes, and yes I've tried different power outlets in my house, and nothing changed. The amp is always plugged straight into the wall.
Tomorrow I'm going where I bought the amp, so I can try if it hum also in the store. Then I'll let you know.

Have you tried other guitars? Maybe a grounding problem with your guitar....?

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Is it humming when you unplug the guitar cable? Is the power cable crossing the the speaker cable or lying parallel to it?
What are you using as a speaker cable?

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Yesterday I took the amp in the shop and we have done other test.
-The amp is humming also when the guitar is unplugged, and when the guitar is plugged in, the hum increases.
-Since I'm using a PPC112 the power cable is always near the speaker cable.
-The speaker cable that I have is not a professional cable, I don't remeber the name, maybe a Proel (I left it to the shop with the amp).
-The amp doesn't hum in standby.
Then, as said by @bclaire, it could be the guitar.
-But with my Squier Stratocaster (backup guitar) the amp still hum.
-My SG (main guitar) connected with other amps in the shop makes them hum a little.
-The guitar technician said that after a lot of years (mine SG is more than 6 years old), cables inside may be worn.
So, it could be both guitar and amp. After all of this I left the OR15 to their amp technician and my SG to their guitar technician. Now they are looking inside the amp to see what's going on, and on my guitar their checking the pickup/cables shielding.
And money goes away...

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
The only way cables in a 6 year old guitar could possibly be 'worn' is if someone had damaged them. Cables don't just wear out in a guitar!!!Moonstone wrote:Yesterday I took the amp in the shop and we have done other test.

If it is a proper speaker cable (as opposed to an instrument cable) that shouldn't be a problem. Unless the connectors are cheap or badly soldered that is.
Sounds to me like a output stage problem with the amp itself. Either that or the OR15 really is just a hummy model, which seems very strange to me for an Ade Emsley design.

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Yo.
Could still be the 12AT7 in the loop as the input jack mutes half of that valve. As the hum is louder with a guitar plugged in, it might suggest this is a potential issue or that some hum is present elsewhere in the preamp (getting in before the mute point at the loop). The amp certainly won't hum by design. Any hum at the loop would also be unaffected by turning the master volume as the loop is post master.

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
Hello everyone, I have an update
Today the shop called saying that my guitar was ready. For those who don't remeber, my SG made every amp in the shop buzz.
The guitar technician said it was not good shielded, so he made a lead shield where the pickup are placed (I don't know the name in English , maybe shell?), on the cables, but NOT on the potentiometer. He said also that now the guitar plugged in their amp is super silent. But we have to test it on the Orange.
About the OR15, their amp technician said that it isn't ready yet. He can ear that there's a problem, and he's now disassembling the head because on the surface seems everything ok. Maybe the cause is in the circuit.

Re: OR15 hum/buzz
I have got the Orange Tiny Terror amp but seem to have a problem which sounds exactly as yours.Moonstone wrote:The guitar technician said it was not good shielded, so he made a lead shield where the pickup are placed
I have a Squier Strat (modded with EMG DG-20 active pickup set) which virtually doesn't hum through my Orange TT combo. And also I've got Gibson LPJ-2014. The latter has got stock 1961 Zebra Coil pickups. The controls reside on a PCB and the PU wires seem shielded to me. However that one has indeed some more hum than the strat.
Can you please specify what's your SG model & what pickups it's got? I am curious, because I am half way on improving the Orange TT electronics (install the choke and maybe recap).
Re: OR15 hum/buzz
I have a Gibson SG Standard 2009. Honestly, I don't know exactly wich pickup it has. I think 490T/498T. But maybe someone more expert than me can confirm that.leningrado wrote: Can you please specify what's your SG model & what pickups it's got?
