OR120 into a PPC212OB? Safe?
Hi and happy turkey day! Also apologies in advance if this has been asked a bunch of times.
I have an early 70s GRO100 / OR120 and I have been running it into an Orange PPC212OB with 2 V30s (rated at 120W). I've been running at lower/clean volumes and was curious if other people think it is safe to turn up further.
I don't think I will be pushing the amp into crazy power tube distortion ever. I mostly plan to play it cleanish and use fuzz/distortion pedals for light boost and dirt. I'll probably push the preamp more than the power on this guy. I'll probably also try removing 2 tubes and adjusting the impedance setting to suit, but I'm not sure if I'll have enough headroom.
What are people's thoughts on this before I make a habit out of it? I know you need to be slightly more careful with open back cabs, but I figure I'm ok due to the conservative rating on most Celestions, and also since I'm not cranking the amp itself into heavy overdrive. Some pedal combos (fuzz mostly) do result in bass heavy hard clipping though (but they do not boost the signal into the amp much).
Thanks! I'm assuming most replies will be "you're probably ok but I would recommend a 200W rated cab to be safe."

I had a RV100MKI for a long time. I asked the same question and the answer was no. In the manual of the RV100MKI it says the output at higher volumes on the dirt channel can reach up to 240 watts. I'm sure the older amps are ever more overpowered. I would say no. Keep it at lower volumes.

Yea, maybe. They used to load the 4x12s with g12h30s (30W) if I'm not mistaken. Though, we all know 100W plexis used to blow 4x12s with 25W g12m's...

You would need to switch the EL34 to KT88, which would bring the RV100 to 140w & 240w peak.Boy_Narf wrote:I had a RV100MKI for a long time. I asked the same question and the answer was no. I would assume you should be safe enough. with the OBC212. IIRC, the OR80 combo came with 2 30w greenbacks, and that wasn't a issue, so I would assume you should be safe enough there.

It is definitely a maybe...
If you don't go too crazy you'll be fine. Could the amp blow the speakers? Of course it could, especially at higher volume or bass settings.
Andy.

You could always throw some Governors or Wizards in there. Eminence rates both models at 75 watts. They've also got higher-wattage stuff like Tonkers too.

Be careful. I almost killed my Open back 212 with V30s with the OR100 running at 50 watts.

Re: OR120 into a PPC212OB? Safe?
Need to be just a little careful. A 60W rated Celestion like the V.30 will almost certainly handle more actual power than a 75W rated Emi. Celestion really do rate things conservatively in a way that other makers don't...Randy Bass wrote:You could always throw some Governors or Wizards in there. Eminence rates both models at 75 watts. Not getting at Eminence BTW. I run several. Just the way it is...

Cranked it at an outdoor gig a couple months back for a single song. The speakers broke up like I had never heard before and took on a rattly, raspy quality that lasted for about a week.Les Paul Lover wrote:What happened?snickerpuss wrote:Be careful. That sounds pretty scary!
I used to be able to send my PPC212. Interesting into a pretty cool rasping sound playing a particular riff. Regardless of volume, there's something to that riff that just sends it there - but it sounds really cool in an whoofy undertone sort of way!
It's weird that that rasping sound disappeared from your cab though... I would assume that if damaged is done it would stay...???
Could your speaker have been moist at all at the time?

Re: OR120 into a PPC212OB? Safe?
Thanks, everyone! This is basically the response I anticipated. I'm gonna see if running 2 power tubes works for me. It probably will. My drummer doesn't even like it when I turn my deluxe reverb up into distortion!
For reference, the other guitarist plays an AC30 turned up to output section grind. I'm shooting for similar volume. My DR sounds great but I'd like more clean headroom. Obviously, an OR/GRO is a different tone as well. Obv, EQ comes into play here too.

Re: OR120 into a PPC212OB? Safe?
I had my OR120 cranked pretty hard one time just for fun while I stood outside the room. That was into a single 150watt rated celestion and even that complained a bit when really pushed. I stopped doing it immediately
