Reeves Custom Hg10

Post by enricoromanielo » Tue Jul 22, 2014 5:26 pm

Hey guys, what's up?

I recently got an offer to trade my Egnater Rebel 20 for a Reeves Custom Hg10. I would also receive a little cash for it.

Don´t know much about it, other that it was developed by some guys who left Hiwatt.

Have you ever had any experience with them?

Can´t access youtube to view videos now.

What do you think??

Reeves are top quality. Don't know about there being anybody there from Hiwatt days - wouldn't have thought so. (Reeves = US, Hiwatt were UK!)

While they started off doing straight Hiwatt designs such as the Custom 100 they have come up with some new ones themselves. Don't know the
Custom 10HG
but it doesn't sound very Hiwatt to me - 1xEL34 single ended class A and a high gain preamp is about as un-Hiwatt as it gets. Still if you like the way it works the build and components should be very good indeed.

Don't know much about them, but Reeves are pretty awesome amps and use quality components. I listened to a demo of that amp and it does sound pretty wicked, may not be a versatile as your Rebel. Personally, the reeves is my type of amp by the sounds of it and owning a couple Rebels (20 & 30) I know I didn't like them very much. It'd come down to value for me and how good the deal is.

Those Reeves amps sell new for like $900 from a quick google search. That's a far cry from the Rebel 20 cost PLUS they're throwing in cash? Is the Reeves stolen?

This is kind of accurate in a not very accurate kind of way.

The owner of Reeves amps was originally the US distribution front for Music Grounds Hiwatt in the 90s and early 2000s. This was a way for MG to bypass the trading restriction in the US as Fernandes owned the rights to Hiwatt.

In the early 2000s Reeves amps split away from MG and started building their own Hiwatt reproductions. They use high quality components with custom wound Heyboer transformers. Their amps are very good quality and are generally considered close to spot on reproductions of the original Hiwatts.

Reeves amps also make some non-Hiwatt amps such as the Custom 12, Custom 10 High Gain, Custom 18, Custom 30, Custom 50 Power Scaling, Space Cowboy and Super 78.

They also make the signature amps such as the Custom Jimmy (Jimmy Page spec Hiwatt with boost) and until recently also made the Dave Gilmour sig and Pete Townsend sig (these may have been stopped due to Music Grounds re-releasing them).

All in all, I would take a Reeves over an Egnater any day.

The Reeves looks like an amazing amp to me. For the love of Todd, make the trade!

The Reeves is a far superior amp and worth double what your Egnater is worth.

Do it and take the money. The Rebels aren't that great.

Thanks a lot guys. I took it. I just did not know about reeves and could not do a proper search while at work. Just hoping the guy does not back out of the deal...

Cheers
