new orange user. need some advice
Hy Guys
As the title says i am new to orange and actually to all tube amps.
This days i ll get a used Dual Terror head from a music store here in Germany. I wanted to ask you if it would be better to change the power tubes and the preamp tubes since idk what history the amp has.. or stick to what it has as long as its not causing any problems ?
Where can I buy good valves for DT? what exp do you have with the diff kinds of valves on this amp and what works best?
Thank You ... best regards
Alex

nobody with an idea?
Re: new orange user. need some advice
As long as the amp is working fine and your happy, I wouldn't worry about it. You could order some just to have. Where you order from depends where you live for the best deal.

Re: new orange user. need some advice
Ty.. I m not so sure what EL 84 tubes to get ..there are some differences like JJ EL 84 and some other like tung-sol or electro harmonix.. Just wondering what works best for dual terror while keeping the typical orange sound.
Re: new orange user. need some advice
Best thing to do is just experiment. Only you will know what ones you like. As far as I'm concerned it will always sound like an Orange amp unless you do some serious circuit mods.
Re: new orange user. need some advice
I don't think any of us would be able to hear any differences soundwise between a couple of JJ's and EHX EL84's in a level matched blind test. Hell, even China tubes sound great nowadays! It is more of a mental thing what brand you like the most and of course the quality aspect...

thank you
Saturday i ll get to the rehearsal where my cabinet is. So i have no idea what the amp sounds like or how old the tubes inside are. I plugged in today ( w/o cab) and everything seems to work fine. I can t wait to hear its sound.

Do not power a valve amp up without a cab!!! If you push a signal through it you may well blow the output transformer. This is okay to do with transistor amps but a real big no no with valve amps!20Alextheman wrote:thank you

Hope it is still okay. If so it should sound great! If not you probably have an expensive repair and sorry but that wouldn't be the sellers responsibility...
Good luck on that.

a.hun scared me ..i hope the amp didn t take any damage
Re: new orange user. need some advice
Just like those other guys said, if it's running ok and you like it, just play the heck out of it. And, if you want to experiment, the world's your oyster with no biasing necessary!!! Get a 5751 preamp to mess with for starters in V1. What a great amp to have!!! Lucky you. Oh, yeah... NOS my friend. Though I can't deny those el84 EH's... darn good.

Re: new orange user. need some advice
Don't panic about it. If you didn't plug anything into the input it'll almost certainly be fine. Damage can only happen if the amp actually tries to develop power at the speaker outputs without having a correct impedance (speaker) load attached. If the amp was on standby or there was no signal being amplified it'll definitely be fine. Only potential problem would be if it was set to play and there was some internal noise (a noisy valve or other component) which when amplified might have damaged the output transformer.20Alextheman wrote:a.hun scared me ..i hope the amp didn t take any damage
You'll know soon enough though and I'm pretty sure you'll never do that again right? FWIW I always check the speaker connections before powering up any valve amp, either combo or head. And after 30+ seconds warm up time I'll set the volume low, switch to play and check that the speaker is making sounds. (Thumb on end of input cable jack --> buzz = what I want to hear.)
