Well, actually J.S. Bach and others invented everything needed for metal and rock about 350 years ago. We just forgot about it all until it was integrated into the blues sometime into the 20th century. :lol:

Ehhh, they didn't really do that much! :wink:

Actually, when I was going through a minor speed/power metal phase years ago, I bought a Bach CD because of the similarities in the sounds.

First major rock hit was Billy Haley and His Comets "Shake, Rattle, & Roll" although he's more well known for the bigger hit, "Rock Around the Clock". The first real rock recording is widely considered to be Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats "Rocket 88" (actually Ike Turner's original band). Also considered to be the first instance of guitar distortion, though not intentional.

Ah, that's right! Rocket 88, I remember hearing about that when I visited Sun Studios in Memphis. I don't know how I forgot!

It's debatable and relies heavily on how you define "rock n' roll" but people from my hometown like to think it's origins go all the way back there and Rolling Stone magazine is inclined to agree: http://www.msbluestrail.org/blues-trail ... attiesburg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't think that one person can be credited with inventing any genre, because for genres to live on multiple people must be doing it. When the word invention is used I tend to think of instruments so I would say that Les Paul and Leo Fender should get all the credit.

i don't recall anyone ever attributing the invention of rock and roll to the beatles.

rock was invented by the meshing of country and blues [including jazz and big band] into what we today would call rockabilly. that was the first rock&roll, originating generally in the southeast and the states bordering both sides of the mississippi river.
