Just played the TV200 used by Mastodon

Post by OU818 » Fri May 18, 2012 5:48 am

The local music store currently has the TV200 that they loaned to Mastodon back on display. It even has the texta marks that the guitar tech left so he could remember the settings between gigs. As of next weekend they are dropping the price by over 50% for one day. If this Hiwatt doesn't work out for me, I know what am I'll be getting.

I plugged it into the HP Cab and set it to 200w. Attenuator off, reverb 0 and Vol 1. The rest of the settings were as Mastodon had it.

Stood a few feet from the cab and hit a chord. I swear if it was anything above Vol 1, I would have ended up like this.

This amp is LOUD! But at the same time it sounded so good that I didn't realise how loud until I noticed my ears felt fatigued and when I stopped playing my tinnitus was going off.

As much as the Hiwatt is still my main goal, this is a close second.

Updates will occur, if not this weekend then next. :D

Am I right in saying that Bill would have used that 200? I've heard he uses a 200 and Brent a 50?

I'm not gonna give you my biased advice to go for it...... unless you need a little encouragement... in which case, pull the trigger on 50% day!

You'd probably be able to turn a profit if it didn't work out for you, I don't see many of these used.

Fantastic amp. :D

Yep, I'm pretty sure it was Bill.

The vintage Hiwatt is my dream amp so I'm gonna check that out tomorrow.
If not, I'll be camping out for this come next Saturday. I guarantee you it'll be sold the moment they open the door, so I have to get down there early.

If it was me, I'd by it regardless of the Hiwatt situation. You could probably turn a profit it on it by reselling it, and pushing the Mastodon connection on it.

I thought the RV100 was too loud before the power tubes began to distort, can't imagine what would happen with a 200 watt Orange. Love the Return to the Future analogy.

Buy both amps!

I love the micro-guitar he uses in that scene...

Marty McFly and the Starlighters...

my real first introduction to blues-driven rock...

I feel like that with my TV50...

I cannot fathom the 200.... or even an OR120 for that matter!

I only have enough money for the Hiwatt unfortunately. I also (probably a smart move in the long run) reduced my credit card limit to the bare minimum a month or so ago

I'm a rockerverb owner, and personally i was not impressed by the thunderverb 200, even with the attenuator. Not that it had less character than the rockerverb, i just felt that unless you're gonna be using a full stack and play stadiums every other day, they're pointless. There is a TV200 sitting in my basement right now because it belongs to a band member of mine, and every time i play it, i feel like i'm waisting electricity, and that i'm not able to make use of what the amp is made of. A TV50 would be more logical and practical, unless you're going for more clean headroom. The mastadon thing won't bring more resale value, maybe 30 years later, but i wouldn't buy a guitar amplifier based on who used it unless it was someone legendary.

What Hiwatt are you looking at getting?

That would have been Bill's TH200, yes. Brent played the TH50.
