Question about Micro Terror power supply

Post by Dollywitch » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:17 pm

At MusikMesse it was said you can "Upgrade" it by using a laptop power supply. And this somehow gives it more power(More volume?)

How does this work? Laptop power supplies are pretty diverse too, don't forget. If I get more volume out of it(enough to jam with a drummer or do a small gig) I wouldn't mind investing in another power supply. But I'm a bit confused here.

Highly unlikely it would make a large difference to volume.

Unless you have documented proof (like a video of someone from Orange saying this that I don't know about) I shouldn't comment on it. However, we're not actively saying this is possible to my knowledge, so probably not a great idea.

If you love the tone but want more volume there are a couple, although expensive, legitimate options out there. The Bad Cat Unleash unit is one idea. I'm actually thinking of getting one down the line if I get back into playing with the big-band jazz band again and using it with my TT.

Or you could pony up the dough for one of those original 60/70 Orange slave units. That would be pretty damn cool.

He said " you will get better signal to noise and maybe better headroom" This could be true with a power supply that is cleaner and can provide more current. That does not mean louder though.

Seems like one of those things best left as-is IMO. It's a practice amp for jamming at home.

Yeah, but I mostly play small venues. I'm getting it mostly as a practice amp but it would be amazing if it could double up as something else. I could try and invest in a small poweramp maybe.

I scored a Traynor QuarterHorse stompbox amp this week. It is 25watts of solid state goodness. It has two channels, takes pedals fantastically and has built in reverb, tremolo and digital delay. When I put it through a closed back 2x12 I reckon it was easily enough volume to play a small venue with if I was just doing a three piece.

So if the Traynor can do it then I don't see why the Micro Terror couldn't.
That being said, I'd still prefer an amp I can do a small venue with by putting it on 1/4 volume instead of cranking it.

Me too for the most part, but I'm still busting out the 4x12! haha.

Actually sitting this on top of a proper tube poweramp could be really amazing.

Does anybody know a cheap EL84 poweramp? There's probably no way to disable the speakers im in line out though, so urgh. Maybe mod for an effects loop?

Yeah I hear that the el84 Tiny Terror power amp is pretty affordable and apparently is modelled on the Micro Terror.

I've also heared that it comes with a free pre-amp as well!

Yeah, but I can't take out a tiny part of it and bring it to gigs to use as a Preamp direct to the desk :P

Where do you plan to get a line level signal out of that? Headphone out?
