How loud is 30 watts? Rocker question
Lately I've been looking to get back in a band (more free time, steady schedule etc..). Been hunting the classifieds and I know my Rocker is a loud 30 watts, but am I going to be loud enough to be heard in a mix? What's your experience, even if your using AD30, TH30 or a DTerror..Thanks! All my band experience is through 50 watts.
Re: How loud is 30 watts? Rocker question
I have used a Rocker 30 and a Rockerverb 50 and have to say that the Rocker 30 often sounded louder.
I now use a Hellcat 35w and easily keep up with an Eminar 100. Granted the Eminar is only on 2 whilst my Hellcat is on 5 however we don't need it louder than that or else it drowns out the rest of the band
You should never have a problem being heard with a 30 watt unless you are playing some seriously loud doom or something.

Re: How loud is 30 watts? Rocker question
i have a rocker 30 and dual terror but have only used the dual terror in a band setting. i have to compete with another guitarist who uses a marshall jcm 900 and have absolutely no problem being heard in the mix.

I have an AD30HTC and it is a loud 30 watts, especially through an Orange 4x12.

Because Orange hog the lower mids, you will cut through any mix. Most other amps don't really deal with lower mids, and most bass players EQ them out (because those bass players are retarded). I have never had to push my AD30 or Rocker 30 past 9 o'clock in practice or gigs.

The rocker is loud, man.
I have to compete with an Engl half stack, volume is on 4 of the Rocker Combo and they ask me to turn it down
As said above, because of the loads of Mids the amp has, you are easily heard in a mix, so volume is out of the question.
As for the DT, I had a TT in the past and could rehearse with it, I could do small gigs with it to, so as the DT is 30W, that wouldn't be a problem either.

....and if you want any more reassurance then here it is:
I run my TH30 on 2 valves and on full power, so in that mode it makes 15watts!!! I still cut through a loud full band rehearsal against a 120 head and dont really go past 12o clock on the volume or 9 o clock on gain.
I use that mode for recording and mic'd gigs too. The only time I would use the full 30 is probably for a rare un-mic'd show?
I'm not sure if it is relevant but I exchanged the V1 and phase splitter valves for Tung Sol Ecc803's Goldpins. They haven't changed the amp's sound but enchanced the stock qualities of the clean and dirty tone.
And to think; I nearly bought a Bognor Ecstasy that day!

Thanks for the replies, just don't want to show up somewhere and not be loud enough with everyone else.

I think you'll be ok . My first orange was a r30 and dimed it could keep up with my other guitarist's jcm 2000 100. I just preferred a bit more headroom so I got the RV 100.
Re: How loud is 30 watts? Rocker question
ditto - my R30 combo's volume only makes it to 10 o'clock sometimes - usually a hair over 9 - gain at 1 o'clockDdjembe Mutombo wrote:Because Orange hog the lower mids, you will cut through any mix. I have two bands - one plays loud - the other, LOUDER
NEVER a problem
and yes, bass players are retarded

If you play in a pretty loud band:
Dirty channel = loud enough
Natural channel without a boost = not loud enough

Re: How loud is 30 watts? Rocker question
My personal experience is that as long as you can be as loud as the drummer your fine. Drums don't come with volume knobs (except for electronic ones) so the volume of the band should be set by the drummer. I have an AD30 2X12 combo and it is more than loud enough. Tons of professionals use 30 watt amps so don't worry about what the other guitarist is playing.
