Help Me Think of Mods For My Strat...
I'm thinking about using some money I get for Christmas to mod my Strat as much as I can. I'm already planning to do these:
First, I'm going to change the tuners to Sprezel Locking tuners. Ill probably change the nut also. I'm so freaking tired of not being able to use my tremolo bar, since it just won't stay in tune after a little use.
I'm going to put a Tremol No in the back cavity so I can switch to drop D and other turnings, as well as unison bends".
Finally, I'm going to put a 3-way switch near the volume knob. This switch in the top mode will allow the guitar to function as normal. In the down position, it will activate the bridge pickup on full, bypassing the volume knob. This way, I don't have to fiddle with my volume knob while switching from clean to lead. The middle switch position will be a kill switch, for the stutter effect or to mute the guitar entirely.
Can anyone else think of some good mods to make on my Strat?

Right now I am messing with a blacktop strat that came HH, I switched pups and went to a 2 knob tone/vol, now I'm tearing that apart and I'm going to try a wide open no vol/tone knob with a blend for the pups. Not sure how it'll be, but the thought of a strat with no knobs sounds cool. All black (even all the screws and the jack) except for the nickel bridge and pup covers.

Re: Help Me Think of Mods For My Strat...
Why isn't your strat coming back to tune after using the vibrato?
It shouldn't be the case. My 1st guess is that your nut isn't properly cut and that the strings a sticking into it. That's the most usual culprit. Perhaps you have changed string gauge?
I assume it's a knife edge - is it a 2 point or 6 point one?
When you use it, does it tend to not come back to tune more with down bends or upbends (assuming you have it set as floating)?
Does a tiny wiggle the other way bring your strings back to pitch?

A killswitch is incredibly easy to fit if you're looking for more mods for the sake of it!

Oh for sure...I have a killswitch on my cables and its really useful, but having it on the guitar would be even better.Le Chat Noir wrote:A killswitch is incredibly easy to fit if you're looking for more mods for the sake of it!

best mod I can think of for a Strat is to sell it and buy another LP...
but I just might be slightly jaded in my thinking...

A Demeter Midboost/Fat Control Pedal

It is like adding more windings to your pickup and the only known cure for strat fatigue.

Re: Help Me Think of Mods For My Strat...
The nut is definitely the first place to look if some strings aren't returning to pitch. I have a graphite nut on my strat but still had issues. I made my own special nut sauce using a mixture of beeswax shoe polish and lubricant.
It worked wonders. No more grippy strings.
As far as mods go, I like the idea of a push-pull pot for a tonal change. You could use the push-pull as the volume knob, and get rid of a tone control or two and replace them with switches for your bridge pickup volume bypass and/or kill switch.

Re: Help Me Think of Mods For My Strat...
I have a strat that at one time I had wired up with a push/pull that flipped on the bridge so I could combine it with either the neck the middle or the in-between for all three pickups.
It was pointless.
So I pull that out and thought of something useful:
Now I have the middle and neck on one tone and the bridge on it's own tone knob, which is a pretty common mod.
But what I am somewhat proud of is I took that push/pull and wired it up so that when it's up I get the middle and bridge in series. Actually works as a little solo boost and kind of gives me a SSH flavor. I've left it that way now for about a year and I've been happy with it.
