Speaker Suggestions for Retro 50
Hey all - I just bought a Retro 50 and I need some speakers. For the time being, I'll be using an Avatar traditional oval-back cabinet. I'm looking at Warehouse speakers, particularly the ET-65 and Reaper HP, which is 50w and similar tonally to the G12H30. Oh, and I'll be using a Jazzmaster and Tele through the amp.
I don't like much of a pronounced upper midrange and I don't like sizzle. I'm thinking of going with a more broad frequency (or neutral), darker speaker with decent headroom, but I'm not sure if this will dull the Retro 50 too much. Any suggestions?
Cheers!

yeah, WGS has some great stuff. i wouldn't underestimate them at all. plus, G12H30s (and their variants) have been known to sound great with Oranges. go for it! and congrats on the sweet rig.

Congrats on a sweet rig. G12H30 is the route I'd go to, or some variant. Where did you score this amp?

Re: Speaker Suggestions for Retro 50
Thanks guys. I'm extremely excited! I bought the amp on the TGP classifieds from a member named Keld. I think he's posted here in the past. It was too good of a deal to pass up -- lowest I've ever seen an Orange Custom Shop amp. I bought it ostensibly (so I told myself) as a backup to my Fargen-modded Tremolux, but I'm sure it will find a major place in my playing. Once I get another cabinet, I'll try a stereo setup.
Back to speakers: Anyone try an ET-65 or 1265-type speaker with the Retro 50 or a vintage Orange/Matamp? I thinking of matching it with the G12H30.

I love stereo setups. It's so great you can combine two really great amps.
Speakers... i would try G12H30's or scumback H75's

Thanks for the Scumback suggestions, but I spent too much on the amp and have to make budget speaker choices atm.

Warehouse is probably your best bet then. I hear they are basically the same thing as a Celestion. I'm thinking of trying the G12-65 copies someday.dreamdistortion wrote:Thanks for the Scumback suggestions, but I spent too much on the amp and have to make budget speaker choices atm.

Re: Speaker Suggestions for Retro 50
I've tried G12H30s, v30s, and eminence gb12s, weber silver bells and blue dogs with my retro 50. My preference was with the G12h30s or the eminence gb12s. I'll be trying out WGS and scumbacks in the future, I'm sure. But H and M type british speakers work really well with the retro.

I'm interested to hear this amp when I get the whole rig together. Last night I plugged it into a single Cannabis Rex, and and it sounded OK, but mostly lifeless and boxy. Probably due to the 7 year old Svetlanas and the speaker/cab combo.

Re: Speaker Suggestions for Retro 50
The Retro 50 (killer amp) does tend toward the darker tones so I found that mine sounds best with brighter speakers. I often use a Orange 212 with the Vintage 30's (good sound) but it really comes alive with a cabinet that has two Celestion Century neo speakers in it. YMMV
(Also, sometimes I put a 65Amps colour booster in front and the tone is pure late 60's early 70's rock)
