New to the Orange Community - Just purchased a TH30 Head!!!

Post by clund » Tue Mar 29, 2011 4:04 pm

Last week I picked up an Orange TH30 off craigslist -- NEW In the box! For $750. I have NO idea how I got so damn lucky -- not sure if it fell of the truck or what, but I completely lucked out for sure.

I can't say enough about how great this amp is!!!

The clean channel is very sweet sounding... I would dare even say ALMOST as sweet sounding as my Fender DRRI (which I just sold). -- Now I don't want to get the the panties wadded up of the Fender fans out there - I AM ONE OF YA... Fender cleans are the best - bar NONE. But this thing is seriously ALMOST as good.

The Overdrive channel is just as great... It can go from Sweet - touch sensitive slight overdrive to Holy Crap that is a LOT of GAIN by just moving the gain knob. I find the gain very usable from about 9 o'clock to about 2-3 o'clock... Anything less than that it gets a little thin, and anything more than that brings out too much noise and compression.

Here is a picture:

My current rig is a H&K Trilogy - but this Orange may take over gigging duty!!! I like it that much!!!

Congrats on your TH30!

I have the combo and I seriously love it.

After buying a basic 6 band eq I was able to fine tune the perfect tone (for me of course) and I wouldnt swap it for anything.

I know exactly what you mean about the clean channel, its just perfect. I have just finished recording my bands tracks and listening back I couldnt have wished for anything else out of it.

Have you tried Delay/Modulation/reverb through the effects loop yet? If not then you are in for a treat.

I have a Malekko Ekko 616 and a crappy old Chorus pedal in the loop (along with a volume pedal, EQ, and Clean Boost) and I agree! Very impressed with the loop. I am looking to get a better Chorus (Retro-Sonic) and add a Reverb pedal in the next few weeks (Tax Return coming soon) - still have not decided what reverb pedal to get. I want a Malekko Chicklet - but they are no longer being made and used ones are going for too much coin now. Might do the TC Electronics Hall of Fame.

I've had my TH30 head for 2 months now and have found it to be a great gigging amp. I replaced the EL84's with new JJ's, and the preamp tubes with EH12AX7's, the amp is quiet and has more than enough power for all my needs. I'm considering trying a 5751 tube in the V1 of the lead channel to see if it improves the gain. Overall I couldn't be happier, dying to try the TH100 but I really don't need any more power.

Aslan... I have been tempted to replace the power and preamp tubes with JJ's... I have heard the TH30 come with slightly lower quality tubes. Did you notice a significant difference with the swap to new tubes?

I tried that TH30 quite a bit yesterday, and quite liked it too. The clean channel is it's very strong point, even if it start breaking up ridiculously early! What an amazing break up though, i honestly was giggling to myself trying it!

You really thought it broke up early? My band plays small to medium clubs and this thing can get MORE then loud enough and still stay clean, even in 15watt (2 tube) mode which is where I usually run it. Now it may break up early on the volume knob, but that is because it is non-master volume channel.

I did a quick video demo of my new Orange TH-30 Amp - Dirty Channel. Give it a listen... I ran through a few shape and gain settings. The amp was only turned up about 1/4 the way in 15 watt mode. Playing was a bit sloppy, but you can get an idea about the amount of gain this amp has. I will try and do a video of the clean channel sometimes soon.

Thanks for the nice words on my Demo... I will try and do a few more demos in the next few days/weeks. I'm really surprised how well the sound came out with this little camera.
