Orange at SXSW

Post by Y0UNGBL00D » Sat Mar 19, 2011 3:11 am

everywhere.

i was at the Stage on 6th yesterday, two bands were playing, all total? 6 orange heads. of the likes of the AD200B, AD30, AD30 black, RV50, and either Ad or Retro 50.

and that was one venue. throughout the course of the night, i saw probably 30 orange amps.

not one of them a Thunderverb 50.

That's crazy! At the bamboozle roadshow last year the second stage only used orange amps, im not sure if orange sponsored it, but I doubt every one of the bands used orange

this is a very good thing for Orange amps. The more people playing them on stages with large audiences the better it is for them. I am glad to see them getting more and more recognition for the sweet tones they are capable of right from the factory.

i am seeing a slightly disturbing trend though. we're trendy now!
i mean its the same old story, really:
marshall i everywhere. boy wants something different, even better, than marshall.
boy sees quirky artist using an orange-colored box of awesome.
boy inquires, discovers they are indeed awesome.
boy buys orange box to be different AND awesome.
boy starts seeing more and more ornage boxes...
boy notices that if a band has a certain 3 haircuts, has at least one school teacher in it, wears REALLY deep vee necks and floral print dresses, and sports ironic facial hair on the men that the band WILL use orange and they WONT be proud of it because "oh that thing? yeah its cool i guess"

sigh...nothing stays cool forever.

but when i mention i play orange too, and the model, they gasp. suddenly being hip doesnt matter anymore :)

i rarely see R30s out in the gigging world too, actually. usually it's the AD30, Rockerverb, AD200B or the Tiny Terror.

ive only seen one rocker 30 live, and it was a local band in VA that worked at the local orange retailer. go figure. sweet map though.

Other than my own amp, I have yet to see another Orange amp being used in a live performance as well. Though I do keep in mind that I don't live in one of the major populated areas, and honestly there aren't that many venues for bands to play in this area.

i'm pretty sure i'm the only guitarist in town gigging with an orange.

actually, there is one other dude, but he dials in this horrendous sterile clean sound and plays this neutered 'maroon 5 as boy band' limp-wristed bullshxt. so yeah, i'm the only guitarist in town using an orange the right way, nice and loud with lots of noise and balls to the signal.

Only have one other dude in the circle of bands we play with that plays orange.

Its an AD30TC head through a Marshall 2x12 and he plays a banjo through it. :P

I see Oranges around here occasionally. The bands I've seen using them the most in the last couple years are garage rock bands, although I have to admit I really only go to garage, indie rock, and punk rock shows. I see silverface Fenders, reissue Fenders, and Marshall JCM800s and JMPs a lot. I see a fair amount of Music Man's too, a Vox here and there, some Hiwatts, some Ampeg V4s. It's really rather mixed usually. IMO, Chicago has some of the best bands in the world that no one will probably ever hear.

Yeah, still pretty rare to see anyone playing an Orange around here (Boston/ Worcester) too. There's a great band called Demon's Alley whose main guitarist/ singer plays an Orange, but I haven't seen anyone else with one... I know they're out there... just haven't seen anyone with one.

Here's Pink from Demon's Alley:

G'n'R uses orange!!!!

had to. you know this.

austin bc of SXSW is orange amp and hipster/unknown/folkster/beard+flourescent pants/plaid/toms shoes/street musician-indie paradise right now.

i love it. most of it is gawd awful trash, but the good stuff is there to be had. mostly at either the major label showcases or the super-unknown places that only have a "stage" during SXSW.

saw a show at motel vegas the other night. sca-ry. decent band though. from brooklynn.
