The new DIVO tube bias technology system explained...

Post by bclaire » Tue Jan 25, 2011 3:12 pm

Wow... this is very cool and potentially a huge impact of those of us with tube/ valve amps!

Didn't really explain much to me. What is it doing and how does it 'know' what to do? I mean the bias requirements to make eg an AD30 and an AD140 sound good are going to be different. One wants a relatively hot bias, the other as cool as possible. Doesn't mean all EL34 and all EL84 amps need to go in those directions though. A R.30 and a Peavey Classic 30 (EL34 and EL84 respectively) would be a bit in the opposite direction I'd think. How is this technology going to work that out?

Want to hear more in the way of real explainations before passing any judgement on this idea.

All it means to me is I can piss about with valves all I want, and not have to worry about damaging anything!

so now I can have an amp that runs EL34, EL84, and KT77's all at the same time? If this is true, I'm going to poop myself.

This could be promising or a complete failure. Hoping the former.

Say maybe the OPC can edit hot / cold bias settings haha

Meh.

Personally, i'm over the need that people seem to have to overcomplicate products with features that they don't need in the first place. IMO amps are already too complicated these days, I personally have no interest in owning anything that pushes that even further.

doesn't that mean, that I don't have to take my amp to the doc to put in new tubes?

sounds less complicated to me, as far as maintenance anyway.

The tone is what sells me amps not the features. If this technology was used in an amp I wanted to buy then great, i'll see how successful it is. If not then chances are I'll never need to know.

Since they have a different pin layout, EL84s would not work but they are suggesting that different octal types can be used. I don't know how (if) they plan to deal with varying pin functions with some different valve types though. Don't buy any diapers just yet. Buy some THD Yellow Jackets. But don't poop in them.

Complete bollocks. One more thing to go boobs up and not at all necessary. Was there something wrong with the Orange amps as they were? Why do companies always have to fix something that isn't broken? Has that thinking ever panned out in the past, for any product?

Double-edged sword... it simplifies things in some respects, but if the DIVO system goes haywire, then suddenly the problem is infinitely more complex.

I'm with Nick and bayta -- I like my Deluxe Reverb, not too much going on, really just have to worry about preamp tubes going bad.

My guess is that DIVO has to be a microprocessor module that controls bias, voltage, and other parameters. I would imagine that the "DIVO-ready" heads are ones that have a RS-232 or similar internal input/wiring to accept an add-on module.

A similar system is used on Markbass' Classic 300 tube bass head. The two seem similar in that the Markbass system also controls bias and voltage parameters, but the similarity might end there. The Markbass system has two switchable bias presets, performs a full power supply and cooling check, and also has a display on the front panel that can give 15 or so diagnoses to common problems, i.e temperature too high, tube failure, power supply failure, etc.

Orange's DIVO system seems unique in that it allows you to switch in different tube types in the same circuit. The only other multiple tube amps that I've heard of that are capable of that are from London Power.

Ooh look, found this link of Ade Emsley talking about the external unit:
