Rocker 30 Power Tubes??

Post by jamison162 » Fri Jan 21, 2011 5:35 am

Don't care for the stock JJ EL34's, but like the amp in general. Typical JJ's, dark overly middy, not enough detail. Suggestions or any input on: EH EL34 or 6CA7's, TS EL34B, JJ KT77's, Mullards?

I swear by KT77s. Gives the R30 a more aggressive tone with tighter lows and snarling highs. They also have smooth cleans with good bottom end and a hint of sparkle.

Never moved away from Svetlana Winged C's in my R30. Tight bottom end, sweet mids and nice top end sparkle. Agree on the JJs. Had to put them in as a stop gap while waiting for a new matched pair of C's and did not get on with the sound at all.
The Svets also brighten up Humbucker fitted guitars thru the R30 which is good.
They are a tad pricey compared to other brands but worth the bucks IMO.

The JJ KT77 turned to mud when i cranked up the poweramp of the rocker30.
The EH6CA7 are the best for that amp if you ask me.
The SED Winged C's are okay but too compressed for my tastes.

The EH6CA7 offer more headroom, vintage tone and they have a very good feel if you play em.
accept darkness.

Sure, if you want a harsh trebly tone that would even put Angus Youngs teeth on edge, the EH 6CA7s work a treat.

You couldn't wank a bad tone out of a Rocker 30 if you were in an ABBA tribute band.
