Which cab to go with the RV50? (Help a Newbie!)
Hello guys, I'm new to forum. I've been following this forum for a while. Since I'm a newbie to the wonderful tube amps, I didn't know anything about it at all. Then I stumbled across this forum, and learned a great deal of information from you guys. So much so, I bought a RV50 because so many of you raved about it. Orange should really pay you guys commission, I can't imagine how many amps you guys sold over the lifespan of this forum.
So while my Rockerverb is still waiting for me to pick her up in the states, I've been eyeing some cabs here in Taiwan. Around here, there are not much choices, 1960a swamps the stages, it seemed like there was no other choice until i posted a "212/412 wanted! any brand!" thread in a local forum. By my surprise, I got quite a few offers. I was wondering if you guys could give me a hand to pick out the what would be most suitable for me. The tone I'm going for is like As Cities Burn, Mastodon, Alexisonfire, Four Year Strong type of tone. Warm tone but with a bit of grits to it. Something to keep in mind though, the price probably seem ridiculous to you guys, but when the demands are low, prices are high. Plus, shipping, duty, the 2nd handed stuff here are like the the new price there in Europe/NA.
1) Marshall 1960a - of course...this again. Around $1000USD
2) Legacy 212 - never played one before...not sure how well it will sound. Around $670
3) Bogner XTC 412 - With my newbie instinct, I feel like this one will do the job for me, except it mad expensive. Around $1300
4) Two Rock 212 - Have you any of you played your orange through a two rock cab? I'm worried it will be too open sounding. Around $1000USD
5) local cab builder 212 - built with Mesa Oversized Recto 212's dimension, with Vintage 30s. Around $550ish
6) Ampeg SS-412ES - Never even heard of these, it has Celestion GT12-75, I'm thinking of swapping of 2 of the GT12-75 and buy some Vintage 30 for it to brighten it up. Around $600
Any input, opinion, or suggestion would be welcome. Thanks so much, guys!
BTW, is it ok to talk about used price??? If not, I will take them down ASAP.

I have the Marshall 1960A that I use with my RV100, love it!
Have you looked into Avatar or White Box cabinets? Those seem to be decently priced and other people on here seem to really like them.
Even the Orange 212 would probably work for you. That thing has a seriously nice bottom end full sound, some even prefer that over the 412. I've owned both the Orange 212 and a 412 at one point and can say that the 212 really filled out the stage! Not sure on the prices where you are though.

Get an Orange 212; nothing better. If you can't do that, then from your list, I'd have the local guy build that unit and then cover it with Orange tolex or whatever matches your head.joeyang761020 wrote:Hello guys, I'm new to forum. As long as the locally-built cab is well-made (good plywood, finger-joined corners, etc,), I'd go that route. Vintage 30s would be better than G12T-75s for that style with that amp IMO. Get it with orange tolex and you'll be in good shape.

Orange cab quality second to none. If you can, wait it out. Otherwise, I'd say the Marshall.

I tried a Bogner cab once. Great construction and great sound, but you pay extra for the name. A local cab maker might be your best bet if you pick the best materials.

I'd get the local makers custom cab. No way I'd pay $1000 for a Marshall 1960a cab or any of the other prices you have listed. At least if you get the local custom cab, you will be paying about the correct price for the cab and won't be throwing your money in the trash.

again, check out avatar or whitebox.
bogner's cabs are good, but that price is just ridiculous.
best overall is Orange's. and probably at the best price out of all listed.

Very true! I would NOT pay $1000 for a Marshall 1960 cab.baytamusic wrote:No way I'd pay $1000 for a Marshall 1960a cab or any of the other prices you have listed.
And yes, definitely check out Avatar and Whitebox, as well as the local guy.

If I'm being totally honest I think G12 75s sound awful with Rockerverbs, they take away that gorgeous warm midrange you buy an Orange for!

Re: Which cab to go with the RV50? (Help a Newbie!)
I don't know if I totally agree with this. I just recently got my Marshall 1960A (with g12-75s) so I haven't had time to really play with it and dial in my settings just right on the RV100. But with my SG (now with the Seymour Duncan P-Rail, set to switch between either P90 or humbuck) and the RV100 I think it sits nicely. I dialed in a bit more bass and dialed back the treble a bit on my head and with my mids set (as usual) at full on I get a nice jangly sort of clean and good distortion on the dirty. I will agree that it is not as warm as maybe the V30s, but for what I'm playing, I like the way it cuts through just a bit - a bit more bite. I've really wanted a more jangly clean which I feel the g12-75 have given me.botch wrote:If I'm being totally honest I think G12 75s sound awful with Rockerverbs, they take away that gorgeous warm midrange you buy an Orange for!
To be honest, like I said, I haven't had it long enough yet to know how I will really get on with it in the long run. And having just installed the P-rail pup (and giving that a trial by fire at our show last Friday) it'll be a bit before I get my settings tweaked just to my liking. But so far so good! And this is just my opinion. I agree that Orange cabs deliver! I know my PPC412 did, I just wanted something different....and lighter!

If they work for you then that's cool! I've just had bad results with them for my chosen application.

Yeah, so far it's a nice change from my old PPC412, but time will tell if I still like it down the road!botch wrote:If they work for you then that's cool! I've just had bad results with them for my chosen application.
