My next project...

Re: My next project...
The sub adds the bottom end and makes the bass drum on a recording sound excellent. I was surprised how much better the recording sounded with the addition of a sub. I thought it might ruin the acoustic bass drum sound or that it the effect would be negligible but it really makes a difference.

Great....Like I'm not crowded enough in the rehearsal room. Let's set up the spare drum kit on your side.
btw. I've never seen anything likethat either. Drummers...Go figure.

DONE! Just needs tweaking, like loosening the back head, but it's pretty cool. Can't wait to really hear it through a PA...

Paul McCartney used a speaker as microphone to record the bass parts to Paperback Writer and Rain (I'm not completely sure if these were the songs, but it is in Geoff Emerick's book). That is how he got the weird, yet cool bass sound on those songs.

That's right- I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to try it in front of the bass rig, too!Borderline Productions wrote:Paul McCartney used a speaker as microphone to record the bass parts to Paperback Writer and Rain (I'm not completely sure if these were the songs, but it is in Geoff Emerick's book). UPDATE:
used it at The Allens' gig Wednesday night and it was really cool- added some good low end. Here's Skippy in action with the subkick:

Re: My next project...
Very cool Billy. Would you say it added any more sound/bass than just using a regular kick mic?

Re: My next project...
Cool stuff. Is the speaker wired up backwards to make it work like a mic?

The low end was more pronounced but you need a second mic to get some of the high end as well...Neiloler wrote:Very cool Billy. Would you say it added any more sound/bass than just using a regular kick mic?

Re: My next project...
Cool. This would at least be worth trying out for recording flavors.
Can you take a close up shot of how you fastened the speaker to the drum head?
