Tell me about the Fender Super Reverb SF

Hi, i have a chance to buy a Fender Super Reverb from 1973.
Its a SF model without a master, 40 watts.
How does it sound? I never played one.

I always wanted an Fender and i want to use this amp as a pedal platform
and as a rock amp. I play Psychedelic, Fuzz Rock, Indie, Stoner stuff...

This amp, at 40 watts, should sound awesome at gig volumes. If it's a good price then I think it would be a good buy, but it's old so might need some attention to get the best from it.

Might not do buzz-saw metal tones all that well, but should be an excellent all-around amp.

If you can get it for a good price, buy it immediately. Supers are amazing amps...

i can get it for a good price!
it's in a good shape, one tube is worn out but i can bias amps myself. no big deal.
but: i never ever had a fender and thats why im asking - if have no idea if these amps rock.
i never played or heared a super reverb but everyone says my playing style is quite fendery.

i have a 65ri it has tone tubby's in it and sounds phenom. but... never use it cuz its to loud for recording in my basment and way to heavy haul back and forth to practice. I find w/ all fender amps that they are very prone to noise, popin fizzing, picking up alien transmissions and cuban radio stations. but I've only had the re-issues and its generally magnified by the bright switch.

Because it's a great hand wired amp with the best reverb available made to a quality standard only found in boutique and other similar amps at a price point much more than I'm guessing this amp is priced at. It's a great wattage for edge of break up sounds at a gigging volume. It's collectable. It will only go up in value if you take care of it. You won't be sorry. If it has the original alnico speakers that's even more of a reason. If you don't like this amp, you don't like Fender amps pretty much.

i'd like to know how well does that amp respond to pedals? what about picking dynamics?
pretty good? because it breaks up quite fast, im not sure if it likes pedals so good.
i won't buy an amp that does't take pedals well. i like my modulation anf fuzz stuff!

i need a good overdrive sound out of that baby too. i'd like to switch between clean and overdrive,
the overdrive, maybe with a pedal or with a boost for break-up.

i don't care for the volume. the louder it get's the better.
i bought a rocker 30 because everyone cryed that im too loud
and now everyone's crying because im not LOUD ENOUGH!
that's because of my dynamic range. i don't play 24/7 cranked, i play
with the volume pot.

Go listen to the Smiths and hear all the effects Johnny Marr uses. He's a Super Reverb player. I think this amp would suit you well.

Also, if you don't mind modding the amp, a lot of people get the first channel that no one ever uses modded to sound more like a Marshall or what have you. I personally wouldn't mod the amp unless it's easily reversible, but it's definitely an option. You can then use an AB switch to go between channels of the amp for different sounds.

I'm pretty sure you'll like this amp from what you describe. Also, it doesn't break up "easy". I just gets a little hair on the sound at the volume you'll more than likely be playing at with a drummer. It's nice amp man, you'll like it.

There is a reason people use these amps still, and why they continue to make reissues of them - they are great sounding amps! I have never played this specific one but the videos and clips I heard of it were great - classic fendery sound, tons of dynamics.

People have been using fender amps as pedal-platforms for years. If you get the right overdrive you can probably make this sound as heavy as you like. My Fender Twin with a distortion on it sounds like a classic rock tone (although I usually just use the gain channel)

I really can't imagine being dissapointed with this. 40 watts for gigging is just about perfect for slightly broken up cleans.

Bi-amp with your rocker 30?! That would sound unreal.

Reasons.

For:-
They take pedals well.
They have the classic fender clean and early breakup.
They are well built and easy to fix.
They retain their value.
They are dynamic.
They respond well to the guitars controls.
Fabulous reverb.

Against:-
They are too good for metal only players
They are single chanel use.
It might soon be due a recap if not already done.
Whilst a combo it is not the most compact and portable.
We'd all hate you for taking it off the market
You will need an overdrive or boost pedal.
No FX loop.
