AD30 v.s AD30TC
Moderator: bclaire
Which one of these (AD30 v.s AD30TC) would be better for a more classic sound. I like the crunch I get from orange heads, but I also like the clean, and its a hassel to have to switch between the both on the single channel. But Ive heard that the Twin Channel has more of a modern sound comparatively.

i vote single channel all the way. the sound is much much better. i am fearful of the versatility i will lose, as i just bought one myself. but the sound was signifigantly better. both the clean and crunch settings sounded better on the single channel. so i'm going to have to figure something out to get versatility. perhaps saving up for a second ad30 in the long run! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
this stuff totally makes me confused.
it should be like two separate singlecannel amps combined two a twincannel..
but this is the second time on two totally different forums i've heard that the single channel sounds better than the twin..
maybe geert has som advice?
at the same time i've heard the opposite.. that the twinchannels crunch is better than the single channel.. this should mean that is also not true.. since it's the same amp.
???
my ad200 sounds amazing..

ok heres a more accurate portrayal. the twin channel, to me, sounded more like a less flavored amp - like a class ab styled tone. not as thick and creamy and warm. some people may prefer that sound - just crunch. the sound is thinner. but by all other aspects, the single channel has more of a class a flavor to it and is why i wanted the class a amp. if i wanted a more ab wattage sound, i would have looked at the ad140. trust me, i am the last person to want to sacrifice my two channels. i'm not quite sure what i'm going to do yet, but i know that in the end the single channel just sounded so much better.

Can't comment on the AD30TC as I've never tried one, but an AD30 single channel is fine. It's very very responsive to your playing, so you can have the gain at a relatively high level, and the harder you pick or strum, the more drive sound you'll get.
I generally don't like changing from one channel to another because try as you might, it always changes the underlying sound, cos you've switched to a different channel! Take into account that i've never tried an AD30TC, so I could be wrong there.
If you have a single channel AD30, you can keep a tight rein on the clean / drive sound you want by as I said, a) watching how hard you pick, b) volume on your guitar or volume pedal. I'd say go with a single channel, and if you want more drive, either do what I suggest above, or get a good drive / boost pedal to load it up at the front end. I'm happier about a pedal with a single channel amp rather than a twin channel amp. With a single channel amp, the underlying sound is still the same, and there are some very good transparent pedals out there to give you a boost.
Hope this helps! Why not just try both amps and then take your pick? Let us know what you decide.
Don't tell me the best way, just tell me the cheapest way...

I'm with bclaire on this, although obviously I respect everyone's opinion; I'll definitely be A-Bing the single and twin channel amps again in light of people's comments here. Personally I like having two slightly more differing sounds. I have different eq settings as well as gain settings on my AD30TC and I need that versatility. Having said that, I've done a few gigs with my AD1512 and a good overdrive pedal (Reverend Drivetrain II or a TS) and that sounded pretty damn good too. You can't really go wrong with the tone, it's all about how many different sounds you need.

I A/B'd the two. I bought the twin channel AD30TC. It's awesome and why bring a distortion pedal to do the job that a second channel of tube distortion is going to do better?
It's all up to personal preferences.... but I see no difference between the two other than the twin channel is more versatile.

Not necessarily on the single vs. twin topic, but this is my take, based on my one month of owning the AD30TC and not having tried the single channel AD30...
The first channel is definitely fuller than the second. At low volumes, I like the first for clean, the second for overdrive; nice Orange roundness on 1, and there just seems to be more saturation on channel 2. However, at band volume, I like to go clean and quiet with channel 2, and take advantage of the meat of channel 1 for the 'balls out'-ness, implementing it for loud choruses, leads, what have you.

Same here, though I use my second channel for drive.
