Hi guys...I new to this board, but have been on the plexi palace one for a little while. I havent been getting too much help over there with this question...although one guy mentioned he had an OD80 from that era with a detachable cord. Well, does anyone know if they made them with detachable cords...the OD120 that is? Thanks

Hi- I'm here too. The OR80 and OR120 are really the same amp- one with 2 power tubes- one with 4. They had switched to detachable power cords in the 70's before they closed shop. My amp is from 1978- amp is at practice right now but I don't have an 'm' listed in my serial number list so I would say no. They DEFINITELY were made with detachable power cords..... Billy
Hey Man...thanks a lot for the help. Seems like that other board is kind of dead and some of the people are getting tired of the questions. I did do a search on the subject, but as usual...there was no bottom line answer. I think I am going to buy this amp i am looking at. I wish it was 80 watts though.

I think you'll like it being 120 watts. You'll get more headroom and clearer overdrive. I have some posts at PP forum about a small mod and the tubes i used to get a AWESOME tone with my OD80. If you have any of the same issues i had with mine let me know or read those posts. It will really improve the tone. You will be very happy with the difference. Its like night and day. Good Luck!
Hey yall...yeah, I am real close to closing in on this amp. I had a Red Bear 120 once (hahaha, laugh with me, not at me). And thing hardly made it past 2. I plan on playing out again, but this amp is mostly gonna be used in my studio here in Austin. Not a lot of studios have cool gear like an Orange.

My '78 Overdrive has an IEC (detachable) power connection too.
Make sure you don't pull both valves from one side! You want to pull one (either one, doesn't matter which) from the left hand pair and (either) one from the right pair. Pull both from one side and you'd be left with a rather unbalanced 'push-push' or 'pull-pull' circuit where you want a balanced 'push-pull'...
You also want to adjust the impedance selector down a notch to compensate for the different effective output impedance when running with two valves. Meaning you'd run a 16 ohm cab with the amp set to 8 ohms, an 8 ohm cab with the amp switched to 4 ohms.
Guess what though, you'll hardly notice the volume difference. OR80s are still really loud.

Almost there, but not quite.bclaire wrote:Pull two power tubes- instant 80 watter....

Thanx for the post. It seems to me that the power cord set up could be helpfull in dateing my or120. My cord is fixed and s# has not been much help. When did they start the plug-in power cord?
