just got a princeton reverb ri to mess with
Moderator: bclaire
The clean= typical fender greatness
the breakup= not so sure.
ten sounds very farty/harsh.
Most of the breakup to me is harsh even with the treble on 1 besides the earliest around 5/6.
I am definitely not feeling the Petty/Omar/Ryan Adams Dirt from it.
Because I have recently had hearing issues and am young have been trying to play lower, thought the princeton would be great.
I read about the harshness, some say the tubes, some say speaker.

Yeah, when I was considering getting one, everything I heard was that the speaker was thought of as the main culprit. Some people that have modded Princeton amps over the years seem to think that the key is to get a good 12" speaker in there in place of the 10". But at the prices, if you can return the Princeton RI, just buy yourself a Deluxe RI. It comes with a really good Jensen 12" speaker and is just a little more versatile than the Princeton, IMO. Price difference is no more than if you were to experiment with a different speaker in the Princeton. Especially considering you might have some space issues squeezing a 12" speaker in it, and will likely have to try at least a few different speakers, break 'em in, etc. The Deluxe RI is a better buy off-the-shelf.
What tubes come in the amp? I found that the stuff that ships with Fender really doesn't do justice to the amps in general. Get some nice TAD or JJ tubes, and then let's see what you think.
Personally....I don't think you can get an amp with a very good clean and a very good distortion...For under about 2000 dollars. That's why I have the TT and the TRRI. TT for overdrive...Twin for cleans.

The first three don't have enough headroom for me...the last one is 1800...which is close to 2000.
If we're talking used...that'd be perfect.

hmmm yeah I was unimpressed with the drive of one of these things.
From what I hear the vintage ones should sound great?
Ryan Adams, Omar R, Mike Campbell.
I don't really want to go through the whole tube thing as I can just return it to sweetwater, I should just get my Twin Reverb to stop humming with the money, and go back to using some kind of rat pedal.

Really?! Well for hithere's needs, they are still too much. Dr. Z amps don't start breaking up with singles until about 70% on both pre and master.

thanks again for the help guys, but I will probably be sending it back tomorrow and use the money for a martin and to fix my twin reverb.
i just want to say though, that I find it a little bit of a shame that when you buy a new fender, which isn't the cheapest, you have to mod it to get it to be useable for some applications.
Money is hard to come by as everyone knows, and I wish these amps just kicked right out of the box like their original models.
Now I have had most of the vintage reissue line, and the one I am keeping is the trri.
