Vintage 30 and G12H
Moderator: bclaire
Hi,
I have just received my second avatar contemporary 1x12 cab loaded with a hellatone 60L (vintage 30 with a little more bass). The first avatar contemporary 1x12 is loaded with hellatone 30 (g12h).
I find myself not liking the vintge 30. I find it to be a more metal type speaker. It's lacks the warmth the g12h has.
I have tried to to play them both simultaneously. In that way I find the tone a lot fuller but I still prefer the sound of a g12h.
Does anyone has any personal experience regarding these speakers?
Would you suggest that I will replace the vintage 30 with a g12h or some other type speaker?

A G12H speaker does sound a lot 'warmer' than a V30, which is a brighter and more cutting speaker.
Metal? Maybe. Hard rock? Yes.
If you play with mainly clean sounds, you might well prefer the G12H speakers as the V30s aren't that good at clean sounds compared to other Celestion offerings.

Mmm... I went with Century Vintage speakers. Not as warm as a G12H, but very sweet sounding on cleans, and you can dial out some of the brightness to get that warmth using your guitar or amp tone dials.

I recently got an Avatar Contemporary 1x12 with a Hellatone 60 (Vintage 30) and it sounded pretty dull until I removed the back of the cab. Then it sounded pretty decent but I still didn't like the V30 very much so I swapped it for a Weber 1230-55 (55hz G12H30) and now it sounds amazing! The Weber (G12H30) has more warmth and grit, whereas the V30 is shrill and sterile and generic sounding. I would say go with some type of G12H for sure, but the consensus online is that a 2x12 with a V30 and a G12H is the best combo. Everyone likes different things. Jimi Hendrix was rumored to have used a lot of 55hz G12H30's back in the day, so I bet your Strat would love them. IMO.

<br />I think I will go with a Heritage G12H or a regular G12H instead of the vintage 30.
I have heard that mixing an alnico blue/gold with a G12H is a good combination, has anyone tried it?

I have a g12h in one of my Avatar Vintage cabs and a Gold in the other. I play a Dr. Z Stang Ray head through the gold and a Savage MAcht 12 head throught the g12h. Seems to be the best combo. I love both speakers, and both sound great with either head. I like the g12H better for boosted signal through over-driven amp, while I like the gold for pushed amp/slight compressed signal. CHime & dimension on Gold is lovely, the the G12H just handles everything in a very balanced, well-adjusted sort of way (to my ear, anyway).

I wish I would have bought an Avatar vintage cab instead of a contemporary one.
Don't know what I was thinking...
I'm going to buy a piece of thick quality birch plywood and cut an open-back I think.

It's stange, I love my live rig tone - AD30TC and Ashdown EVO-III 500 bi-amped - but I find the AD30 on its own sounds very 'cardboardy'. Without the bass amp, there is no bottom end or warmth, it sounds very dark, dry and clinical. The two together are heaven though, I get so many compliments on my live tone. I might follow Joe's lead and buy Century Vintage at some point, but I'm too poor currently!!

It's a good idea, Teddy... not sure about dry sounding (my AD30 sounds nice and organic), and it won't do much about the bass-shy nature, but I love the sound of it compared to previously...
