Hi
I've just purchased my first Orange amp (used)
Can anyone tell me more about it.
Serial number is OA7190 Model number ORS100
I was told it was early 70's, it's the one with
the pictures above the knobs. The condition is
quite good for it's age a few scuffs and scrapes on the vinyl.
I've always admired the Orange amps and I'm quite fortunate
that Matamp is only a couple of miles away, so repairs if any
should be quite easy.

Personally, I think a picture, if you can post one, would be better at determining the age of the amp. I'm not so sure there's any rhyme or reason to Orange serial numbers until the last few years. Billy

How do I post images on this forum. I've tried and tried without much success.

To post a picture, it must be already uploaded to the web. Your own personal site or a free/pay one.
You can then link to it here or post it using the format button above, 5th from the right.
Here is an example:

Thanks Meole for the info. Unfortunately I'm not very intelligent with the computer . Don't have a website, and don't know how to build one.
Is there any other way of posting the pics of my amp. If I was to email them to you, would you post them for me as a favour. I'd really like to know the build date and info (especially what the pics mean and what the current value might be), and anything else I ought to know about when using it.

I've managed (with help) to upload the image of my amp.
Can anyone tell me more about it please. ie. age, what the controls are and it's value etc.

looks just like mine: www.geocities.com/ecto_coolest/page4.html

mine is a plexi or120, serial number 4229, and it was built late '71 or early '72.

does yours have a plexi front panel or is it painted enamel?

the controls are (left to right):
F.A.C., bass, treble, h.f. drive (or presence), and volume (or gain)

some advice on getting good tone with this amp would be to not be afraid to turn the bass to zero. if you set the fac to the far left or one notch above the far left, there will be a ton of bass when you turn the amp up even with the bass set to zero. if you turn the bass up then it starts to sound muddy IMO.

i have mine set with the FAC on the second notch from the left, bass on zero, treble at 3o'clock, presence at 2 o'clock, and gain at 3 o'clock. the head is going through a 4x12 cab with celestion V30s. this is with a fender jaguar with humbuckers in both bridge and neck positions and NO pedals.

you will love the overdrive on this amp...finding a clean sound to go with it is the difficult part. orange amps sound like crap with most, if not all, pedals. i still haven't found a solution for my setup...

congratulations on your find.

eric

Many thanks Eric for the info. It is much appreciated.
The front panel on mine is plexi glass and the serial no. is OA7190.
The model type is ORS100. I notice your serial no. is OA7390 I wonder how these numbers work?. I don't think that Orange would have made 7000+ amps by the 1971 ish do you? Do you think that the first two letters are the year and the last two the amount to date? The explanation of the controls you gave is very helpfull, I'm going to go and have a play with it later tonight.

Cheers Dave

Wow Dave, the amp looks awesome. Congrats! I wonder if you're right about the serial number... sounds plausible to me. Billy

so you are saying that yours would be the 90th orange made in 1971 and mine would be the 90th orange made in 1973? i dont know if the first 2 numbers could be the year because that would put mine at 1973. the picture that meole posted above is the orange line from 1973 and my amp isn't pictured there, they switched to pix and text that year. perhaps the orange casing around the amp is from '73 and the amp was made earlier? maybe that is why there are seperate serial numbers on the head case and the actual amp.

i get a headache when trying to date these things!

It was just what first came into my head when I saw the serial number, I really don't know if it's right or not. Maybe there is someone out there who really knows how they arrived at these numbers. I'm going up to Matamp UK later this week, I'll see if anyone there has any ideas. The guys up there are very helpful.
My amp only has the one number on the casing. Where it says serial no. on the back of the chassis, it is blank. I've looked very closely and there is no evidence that a number has been removed, it doesn't look as though it's ever had one. Not had chance to have a play with the amp yet, but I think I may leave it until I've had it checked over.
I had a little look in the back of the amp and theres loads of dust around, so maybe a vac around first might be a good idea.

Dave
