it doesnt look like anybody knows how to date an orange head except the vague, graphics only pre 72, graphics and text post 72 and pre 76 if it has a fixed power lead if i remember rightly!(i am sure geert will correct me if i got that wrong, GREAT WEB SITE GEERT, BY THE WAY)
does anybody know if the serial numbers were concurrent or followed any pattern? does mr cooper have anything to say on this subject as most vintage orange owners would love to know if their amp was older than its owner!!!!!
i dont even think it would help if everybody listed their model and its serial number to see if there waqs a pattern, would it?
even if you could date with the speakers how could you be sure the cab and head were from the same era? my cab definitly came from a different source to my head.
congrats to orange for getting their forum working, will we all be abandoning plexi palace now?
ooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh its an orange!

Actually I'm still working out this dating stuff myself.
http://www.geocities.com/geertjacobs/dating_page.htm

There are not too many people around that know exactly how to date. Most vintage shops estimate them older than they are too... I've started this small table: at the moment the point is to date some combo's by speaker and to see where inbetween the heads fit.

If anyone has some more info, it's more than welcome :-)

OK this is only a guess based on what I've seen and read. The GRO series was sequentially numbered starting at 1. Not sure about the ORS series, but the pics only OR120s were sequentially numbered starting with 120001 ie 120 is the prefix indicating 120 watt amp. Maybe somebody who has a pics only OR80 could confirm that these were done the same way but with 80 as prefix. The next OR amps with pics and text had a number similar to the one at the start of this thread, but I'm not sure if they started at 1 or where they started. The early 90s reissues also started at 1, as well as the current amps, although I'm not sure if each model has their own numeric series.

Twang,

my guess is that the chassis are numbered sequentially in the different numbering stages, no matter what model the chassis was used for.
(The 125 is of course an exception since the chassis is completely different.)
The pics and text models with five digits could be starting at 12000 or at 10000(maybe something else). Not sure about that.

Geertjacobs,

OK, here's something that might be a twist. I have an OR120 Overdrive, pictures and text, large and small knobs with an attatched power cord, serial number 13193. Supposedly, the overdrives were made after 1976, but the cord would indicate a pre-1975 model.

dsound is your amp Graphic or Overdrive? I'm guessing Overdrive with that SN. I have a Graphic OR120 with SN 120595. Who knows though. This dating stuff is a mystery. Someone at Orange has to know this stuff. I wish THEY would POST some INFO on THIS site. Anyone? <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

Amp is Graphic OR120. Transformers are
OT ref.75738
PT ref 75737
Choke ref 75020.
Now I think amp was made in 1975.

An Overdrive is a graphic with a master volume. Just to get that clear.
Amps with detachable power cords are most likely 90's. Deatachable cords have EURO connectors (don't know how you guys call'em) but they're pretty recent. IIRC they are a must have safety regulations nowadays.
A 120xxx serial number is early seventies according to my info

Hi Guys, I'm Andy...

I've got hold of OR120, serial number 11316. I'll check this later, but I don't remember the exact details (like the trannys, parts etc).

When you say 'graphic' heads, does this mean there is no text above the controls?
Mine has text and a little picture (Treble clef for treble, etc.) above each control, and has the HF drive control rather than a genuine overdrive control. Gain is rather overall volume than a preamp control.

Then, I guess you knew all that already.

I'm also researching as to when these amps were made. I think British pots might have date codes on them, so that is one avenue to try, but I distinctly remember that there was nothing revealing on the inside of the amp when I opened it up.

Keep up the good work, I'll keep everyone posted if I find anything out!

Andy

Good info on Geert's page.
Some more questions:
So, did they stop making the OR graphic type amps when they started making the overdrive amps? Are there much later graphic amps?

My OR120 has a detachable cable, but it could be a retrofit. I'll check that, it should be easier to identify a changed part (and a hacked chassis!).

Do any of the other components, like the caps, have date code info on them? The caps in mine are Plessey I think.

Wrong on the detachable power cord. My OR80 Overdirve head with a date tag of 1978 inside has a detachable power cord- identical to current models and computer power cords. This head is totally original.... Billy

Billy,

could you post your chassis no and cabinet no so I can put this in my dating page? Amps with date tags seem to be rare. Do you have a slave out or a standby switch on that Overdrive 80?

Thanks,

G.

I'd have to open it up to get the exact date but it's 1978 year.

78 Orange OR80 Overdrive- serial number 015583
cabinet number- 63699

Standby switches didn't appear until this millenium so my amp doesn't have one but all of my amps have a slave out.

Billy
