1971 Orange 4x12 / Rare logo ?

Post by jogi.sch » Fri Mar 13, 2015 8:52 am

Hello,

I picked up a vintage orange cabinet yesterday and I was wondering if someone could help me with background information.

I believe the cab to be built in 1971. I opened up the back and all four Greenbacks are stamped GD7, which should equal a production date 7th of April 1971 if I am not mistaken. The serial number is 1281.

The speakers are in great condition, only the tolex and the front are showing some rock'n roll history.

My questions:
I have not seen a cab with this "Orange - Voice of the world" logo before neither can I find something online about it. I have seen the logo with "Voice of the World" underneath in the 1971 orange catalog scan, but the cabs have the graphic above the logo as well. Is the graphic missing on my cab or did some cabs come without the graphic above the Orange logo? Second question is about the handles as shown on the pictures - are these original?

Thank you!

Some pictures for you >>>

Definitely original. Orange used that logo for a short time... and I don't believe that it would have had the crest above it...

Nice cab - now that I'm looking at it on my computer and not my phone I can see it's in really great shape for its age - do you have the cover as well?

Thanks for your help! No, unfortunately the cover was lost, but I am looking into a cover or even a case to protect it. It was stored away in a dry garage for nearly 30 years and it settled a lot of dust. I gave it a good cleaning with a nail brush and warm water with a little bit of mild soap. Looked like a different cab afterwards. I won't do more restoration on it, I like a bit of vintage vibe :)

Here is a picture I took while cleaning the cab. Right side is after cleaning it, left side still settled in dust.

Nice cab, and I think you've got exactly the right attitude to it too. Yeah a decent cover will keep it clean. My '78 Orange head has been gigged a lot with just the original slip cover and it still looks great.

Great find and I'll bet it sounds wonderful too with those old G12M-25s. Which amp(s) will you be using it with?

Seems to me that logo would've been right after they stopped saying Orange/Matamp on them. I've never seen this plate before. Nice find.

First of all: thank you for the warm welcome!

Seems like the cab is a real "transition" cab. The Orange logo seems to be a transition logo during the Orange Matamp split. And I just learned today that the speakers are wearing 'transitional' labels that were used in the Celestion to Rola-Celestion transition phase. I guess I was quite lucky to find that cab :D

I am going to build a dual (Mono) amp setup. The cab above will go with my '71 OrMat 100 and my current PPC412 will be driven by my '78 Hiwatt 100. Here is a group picture of my amps before i acquired the 4x12.

Full approval. I've got a '78 OR120M and '74 DR103 myself. Great minds clearly think alike!

Yes. You should. Then I can bulk up its Web 1.0 appearance.

Awesome looking cab! I have a very similar one which I posted on here a few years ago. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=47059" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Mine is a little more rough and has the later metal handles and the speakers were changed out. Mine has the crest which is original to the cab. Just picked up a quad of 71 pre rola g12h with pulsonics to throw in it so it will almost be as cool as yours.
