Orange Matamp OR80

Post by DpC » Thu Dec 18, 2014 8:03 pm

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you could help me out and tell me a bit about this amp that recently came into my possession. Here's a small album http://imgur.com/a/M1JvT" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have looked at the Orange field guide, but I'm still not too sure what I have on my hands here. It says right on the back it's an OR80 yet there's 4 power tubes. Perhaps that was a mod by a previous owner? And the manufacturing year is beyond me.

Thanks for any and all help!

That's an aftermarket front panel. You've got a Pix Only Or80 with an OrMat replica faceplate. That's my guess. The engraving on the plate doesn't look like any of the others I've seen. Especially considering the missing Drive control.

That sounds roughly correct.

Not a couple of years earlier???

I though 'Pix Only' amps ran 'till about '72...

I did a little more digging, and it appears your amp is right at the dividing line between the ors100 amps and the OR80 amps. It looks like you've got an OrMat style chassis, but it's cut for lay down transformers. Here's a link to a similar chassis being rehabbed by some cats in Australia.

So, what do you think then? Is the faceplate original?
