Orange Matamp SN: 300

Post by idiotspasture » Wed Sep 17, 2014 10:11 am

I picked up this amp off somebody last night and wondered if anybody could give me some more info about it?

I'm pretty amateur when it comes to amp history. I guess it's an OR100? The guy that I bought it from said that it has been read by a Matamp specialist at 120w (although on the back panel you can just about see that '100' has been written in marker next to the model). The guy had contact Matamp but it's too early for them to have a record of it. It has been suggested that it could've been a custom build or some sort of prototype?

Sounds amazing. Never thought I'd own one but it popped up for sale in the tiny town that I live in so I really lucked out.

GREAT amp! Nice score....

Have you checked out the Orange Field Guide? It will help with info... as would the Orange book.

I'm very late to see this one. I can only see two of the pictures now.
The Ormats were only three models: ORST (2 EL34, 50 watts), OR100 (4 EL34, 100 watts) and the OR200 (4 KT88 I believe, 200 watts).

I remember reading that the OR100 did push out a bit over 100 watts, but not as much as 120. More like 107 or something, but why would that matter? It's still too much for pretty much any application today.

With a serial number of 300 it was probably made around '71-'72.
The amp is not a prototype, those were made for Fleetwood Mac in 1968 and were all disassemled after the US tour. Mat Mathias had a book where he kept record of the amps but rarely filled in the info. I've actually scrolled through this book myself and I'd say that about every 10th amp had notes about them.
