Identification Help

Post by mgabriel » Thu Jul 21, 2011 4:37 pm

Hello everyone - this is my first post, but I've lurked here before. I called up the USA headquarters and spoke with a really helpful guy named Alex, who directed me here.
I'm trying to identify my Orange amplifier. I purchased it used around 2004. Here's what I think I know, which Alex helped me with and I read through a link found on this site.

It's a 1976-1977 Overdrive model tube amp, Serial Number '14085'. The Model number on the back simply says 'OR', but I think that's a mistake. The interesting thing with this amp is that it's covered in black and it appears to be all original.
The amp is in mint condition, with minor scratches and no tears. I attached a few pictures.

Here's the web album link, but I attached the main image below.

https://picasaweb.google.com/MichaelRGa ... eAmplifier" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I've used it in the recording studio and a few live shows with a Marshall 4x10 cabinet w greenback speakers - It sounds amazing.
I am consider selling though, since we just had our second child and I don't play it often. What would be a reasonable price for it?

Thank you - Michael

Nice amp- not unusual for the model to be just OR on these... mine is too.

As far as what you could get for it, it varies and depends on what someone will pay at the time. Follow some ebay auctions to get an idea, but I'd say if you put it on sale with no reserve on ebay it could go for anywhere between $1000- 1800 in my opinion, and in the USA. More or less depending on your luck....

Interesting amp. Serial number (which I can't read on the pic) would suggest a '77 amp right enough. Check the 'dating Oranges' page near the bottom of the menu on the left here:
http://users.telenet.be/orangefg/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or here:
http://orangeampguide.atspace.com/timeline.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But the metal back panel plate and some of the front panel features also suggest 'a '90s reissue. If you check Billy's front panel reference guide here...
http://www.theallens.theallens.com/or_reference.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
...you'll see that it has a '70s style logo and 'Return' / 'Send' lettering, but '90s style knobs and FAC and gain graphics - all on the same faceplate.

I don't doubt it is a genuine Orange, but I haven't seen that combination before so it is an interesting one, and very possibly in a non original head box.

Back metal plate is something I missed. Maybe it was NOS or something? It looks like it doesn't have the inside blocks that a tolex insert back would need to mount...

Very interesting... are there any "inside the chassis" shots or have you looked for an inspection tag that would have a date?
