I kind of dislike the harsh upper end of the vintage 30 speaker. Would really like to buy the bulldogs but they're out of my budget.
What speakers should I look at? I ride an AD30r.

Is the Bulldog the same as a Celestion Alnico Blue? If so, then I'd look into weber speakers. I'd look to Weber for any speaker actually... Weber makes just about any type of guitar speaker out there and they are very high quality. They have an excellent bulletin board there as well where all your speaker questions can be answered.

Check them out at www.webervst.com
PS, no affilliation with Weber. Just a satisfied customer.

ditto to what justin said. last time i read, weber's highest selling speaker was their blue dog because the celestion alnico blue is something like $250.00 and the weber alnico blue dog is something like $160.00. and as far as quality and customer service, it don't get no better than ted weber.

It may help you to let those speakers break in a tad, they smooth out a bit after the cones loosen up. If you hate a speaker, breaking it in isn't going to make you love it, but it does make a noticable difference.

That being said. The AD-30 is an amp with a pretty dark voicing, and there's a reason why they went with the V30. Weber makes some very nice sounding speakers, but before you spend the money on something else, I think you should give those V30's a little longer. It would suck to buy something else and not be happy with the results. You may find yourself on the other extreme. A dark amp, with a smooth speaker may take the agressiveness out of the overdrive for you.

I have personally never liked the bright, harsh high-end of the Vintage 30, in any amp or cab I've played through, that had them in it. My own AD30TC has one Celestion 25w Greenback, and one Weber alnico Blue Dog (they make a less expensive ceramic magnet version as well), and it sounds GREAT! I think Weber makes an excellent product. Go out to Weber VST and check them out. Just as an FYI, I also own two Top Hat Club Royales, which came STOCK with the Greenback/(ceramic)Blue Dog combination - so it's a very happening setup!

I have a AD30R and changed one of the V30's for a Weber 8ohm 50watt Blue Dog Undoped. Made all the difference in the world. It no longer has that harsh upper midrange sound.

i'm with nick on that one. my v30 equipped 4x12 was very harsh when i first got it. after about 6 months of use the harshness went away. the speakers match the darkness of the head perfectly in my opinion.
