I believe Orange have been using JJ EL84 for stock amps.

Nope. Orange have stated they use whichever valves the think is best at whichever particular point in time.

They have been using JJ EL84 for all their amps for a while, but could cyange that any time if they had reliability issues in the future.

Why do you need to know? (Not that curiosity is a bad thing! :) ), I'm just wondering if you have an underlying question we can help you with.

They all get good and bad reviews theae days.

Everyone complain the new production valves aren't as good, reliable....

For what it's worth, I've had TAD, JJ, Sovtek (Not from new, and they took quite a punishment in the amp I bought with them in), I would be happy with any of them.

I use Russian NOS 6P14P EV valves instead of the usual EL84 these days though. They sound great, and supposedly should last 10 times longer than regular modern EL84, but I can't vouch for that yet.

+1 for the Soviet 6P14P-EV tubes. Clearest, cleanest sounding EL84 I've tried in my amps. That said, there's nothing wrong with JJ's, they usually come stock in Orange amps (or at least so I've heard. They came with my Rocker 15 Terror and a Tiny Terror that I sold). Really nothing wrong with EHX, TungSol, or any of the current brands. I had a bad experience with Sovtek EL84M tubes, but not the regular Sovteks.

The 6P14P EV was a Russian manufactured valve equivalent to the EL84. The EV suffix is important as it means the valves were built to a military standard and expected to last over 5000h.

They are overspec'd EL84, can take strong plate voltage, and sound superb.

Manufacture stopped in the 80s, and your main source for them is eBay. If you are uncomfortable buying from dealers without established reputation, don't buy any. Some well known internet dealer can supply them too, tested, at an extra cost.

I bought around 20 of them in total as matched quartets, from 3 different eBay dealers, and had to send 1 quartet back as they were obviously well used - I made that dealer pay for the return shipping as they lied about the condition of the valves. All others were new and sound fantastic.

Copy this:

6p14p-ev matched quad NOS

Go to ebay and paste and search. You should get a number of hits. Or you could try www.thetubestore.com. They sell them as their 'Preferred Series 7189' tubes....but at a significant markup.
