Orange Terror Bass 1000 Chip

Hello,

I need some help here to keep my beloved amp from the grave. I have an Orange Terror 1000 Watt Class D amp that suddenly started fluctuating sound levels. I had a practice with my band and at one point the sound level was fine and suddenly it dropped. Came back a little while later and dropped again. When it dropped the volume pot wasn't really changing levels at all. Repair guy claims it is a chip that has went bad and unfortunately Orange no longer makes them so I can't find a replacement for the part. First, should I get second opinion? Second, has anyone ever ran into this problem? These amps are incredibly hard to find. I found only 2 used ones for sale, but I would rather not have to replace it. Thanks in advance

Have you checked eBay for the chip? Wouldn't surprise me if you could get one direct from China really cheap.

Give us high res resolution of the PCB and the chip your amp repairman claims is dead.

I'm sure we can find it for you from somewhere.

Orange, like all other manufacturers, use standard production electronics.

It is the IRS2092 chip. Since posting this I found out that the manufacturer who produced these quit producing them around 2 years ago. I might just retire it, unfortunately.

EBay seems to be full of them?

It is the amplifier chip itself. If you search IRS2092 on ebay you will get fully built boards as a result. It is a 16 pin chip.

On the top of the chip it has this written on it:

IRS2092
036P IOR
C F9T5

I can try and take a picture of it, but my phone takes really horrible pictures. It looks similar to this: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 6f0bSlAczS - different pin, though.

From what I have been told these chips are a common problem and the amp is not worth fixing.

Not sure if that's exactly what you want?

The original bass terrors have had issues with reliability, but I have no idea if that's the reason or not.

I'm not sure what the codes after the IRS2092S mean (date & manufacturer, serial number?) but I suspect that chip will work. For the price it's worth a try before giving up on the amp.

The last S after IRS2092 usually denotes the chip is silent and suitable for audio applications.

All the rest most likely is manufacturing codes (factory, batch #.....).

The other codes are shown at the bottom of this specs sheet (date, assembly site, and lot codes). Interesting that the chip appears to be intended for 500 Watts output but the amp claims to be 1000 watts. Makes me wonder if they're over-driving the chip and that's what the problem is...

I'm thinking the 1000w might use 2 of those.

I haven't seen a schematicn, nor a PCB pic , so not sure.

As cheap as they are I would get several so you have backups if they go bad again. If they're soldered directly to the PCB you might want to add those IC sockets that the chips plug into so they can be easily replaced if needed.

I might give that a go. From what I understand those chips are the reason those are no longer in production. I think they were causing a bunch of warranty issues and eventually they just quit producing them. The amp still works for the most part. Just the volume may suddenly drop for a while and come back. If anything I can still use it for fiddling around at home or whatever, but I probably won't depend on it as much on a stage with me. I'm kind of curious what causes them to fail myself. Either way thanks to you and L. Paul Lover for taking the time to help.
