Attenuators And 15-Watt Terrors?

Post by adkguy07 » Fri Aug 02, 2019 1:30 pm

It may seem odd that I'd ask about attenuators for a 7/15-watt Dark Terror amp, but there are circumstances where I wonder if I could squeeze a bit more volume from the amp, but still be sensible concerning home volumes.

Some opinions run that an attenuator can be the cause of amp failures with regard to transformers and tubes. If that were true, why are so many using these devices with even more wattage than my 15-watt amp? Other opinions are very favorable, as long as the amp is matched to the right attenuator for an amp's wattage.

They make total sense with a Terror amp. I used my Bad Cat Unleash as an attenuator with my VOX Night Train for a couple years. Sounded MUCH better pushing the VOX and attenuating back to reasonable practice levels rather than playing it at low levels.

I don't have any experience with other attenuators. However, for peace of mind, I wouldn't be plugging my amps into anything cheap. I just picked up a used Two Notes Torpedo Captor and think it's an excellent tool for any guitarist. The sound of my amp, in my ears is a pleasure.

At low volume a boost or overdrive pedals can make a bit diffence to push a tube amp a bit harder to give a more pleasant tone.
