How to Price a Broken Amp?

Post by Caoimhin » Sat Apr 28, 2018 6:59 pm

I already own a TV200 but I picked up a chassis with some known problems that I was going to get repaired but I've decided I want to sell it. One of the tubes is red plating and I can tell all four of the sockets have been changed out. The after market soldering work is awful so maybe that's creating a problem. The seller let me know there was some melted wires done by a soldering iron but they don't look to be burned through the insulated jacket so I don't think that will be problem. I flipped it on and both channels work but there's a slight buzz that seems to be coming from the transformer. It will probably cost me a lot to get it diagnosed and repaired so i just want to get rid of it. I'm thinking an Orange dealer would be able to repair it just by getting hold of a new circuitboard for the power amp section and dropping it in to save on labor costs but there aren't any authorized dealers in my area. Do you think I could get anything for it selling it online for parts or repair only?

Everything is worth something- even if a little.

Lots if non working gear being sold, more or less successfully.

Describe the problems honestly, and Good luck!!!!

Once saw a Rockerverb in pretty much the same condition selling around $600.

Put it on eBay and let people have at it. I've seen non-functional amps go for stupid amounts of money there quite often.

That's exactly what I'd do, post lots of pictures and a thorough description of the condition, the amp does work but has a buzz/hum going on. I wouldn't post your speculative diagnosis, let the buyer figure out what's actually wrong when they get it.

I know somethings are of limits when we start talking about poking around inside of amps so I hope I'm not breaking any rules here. I spent a little time with the amp today have found out what damaged the tube.. there's no plate voltage on V2. The solder joint on pin 3 isn't the best but it doesn't seem like that's the cause of no voltage. Any Ideas? Do you know if Orange would just sell me a power section board?

Just contact Orange and ask them.
However, the TV200 has been discontinued, so they may not have extra boards anymore.

Doubtful any boards are available.

Your best bet is to bring it to an amp tech to fix it and rewire what was previously "fixed." That's if you want to keep it - otherwise, cut your losses and sell it as-is. This sounds to me like it is definitely NOT a DIY job...

After spending a lot of time checking the circuit board I decided to pull it out to have a look underneath. I found a loose solder pad that wasn't making contact with a trace so I soldered it down and everything seems like its back to normal.
