V30 PPC112 pairing help please

Post by robbvant » Sat Jan 13, 2018 1:58 am

So I have a 112 combo (open back) with a voice of the world speaker and I have a v30 ppc12 closed back cab.
The v30 is much louder than the voice of the world speaker.
And putting another v30 in an open back sounds flabby.
What’s my best route to go?
Open to changing the v30 to match the voice of the world speaker too.

I never found a V30 to sound flabby in an open back. Is it possible the VOTW sounds quieter because it’s in an open back? You get a bit more projection in a closed back. I was under the impression they were similar to a V30, and I think I remember them saying they rated around 100db. I think a V30 is 98 or so.

V30s are rated for 100db, maybe the voice of the world are rated for 97-98db. Cause they are definitely much quieter than the v30. And every 3db is perceived as twice as loud so it’s a HUGE difference in volume.
The combo is only 1/4 open back. And I think I’m gonna try another v30 in it. Seems like the simplest and most logical solution.
v30s are very easy to buy and sell on the used market here.

I have a V30 in my AD15 combo (open back) and it is absolutrly not flabby.

Sounds great even.
However, as mentioned by jondog, an open back configuration lets the sound escape from the back - they definitely sound quieter when directly in front of the speaker. They are greater at filling small/medium spaces with a more even volume though, as the sound is much less directional.

V30s are indeed 100dB, and I’ve never heard one sound flabby. They’re tight almost to a fault. They’re so tight, that’s what some people don’t like about them.

I’d guess that you will not have any issues with a 2nd V30. I run V30s in my closed back cabs all the time. No flabbiness whatsoever. They’re the tightest most rigid speakers I own.

It takes twice the wattage to give a 3dB increase, but 3dB is nowhere near twice as loud. It's a noticeable increase, but if the V30 is completely burying the VOTW there must be frequency response issues also at play.

Acousticians universally agree that +10dB is a doubling of perceived volume. (As a simplified general rule -- there are a number of psychoacoustic factors that complicate the perception of volume.)

You'll find some electrical engineers who conflate dBspl with dBv and argue that +6dB is double the volume. And yes, +6dBv electrical gain will produce +10 dBspl.

Thanks for all the great info guys! So I just bought a v30 about to install it...
I weighed the votw speaker it weighs 9.8lbs. The v30 weighs 10.4lbs. I did a quick cross reference no celestion speakers are 9.8lbs. I’d like to solve the mystery of what the votw speaker actually is. I’ll prob start another thread for that.
Ok I am about to rock out now I will tell you the results of the sound test.

Yeah the v30 was the way to go, speakers match very nicely. Very impressed! The v30s are a lot louder than the votw speakers, like night and day. I do also have a dark terror and Jim root 212 cab and love the sound of the votw speakers in it. but they don’t pair well with a v30 speaker.
If anyone one is wondering my combo is a cr60, and this amp sounds incredible with a v30 in it. Plus another v30 extension cab, this amp sounds just like a rockerverb, no joke. Right now I like it way better than my dark terror.
Very glad this all worked out for me :-D
