OR80 Transformers

Post by Lowguh » Wed Dec 20, 2017 11:56 pm

Hi All.

I just bought an OR80.

I'ver heard that some had OR120 OTs and therefore the impedance is incorrectly labeled. If that's true, is there a way to tell without actually testing the transformer? Is there a size difference between the OR80 and OR120 OTs or some kind of serial number range?

I realize that I can measure voltage across the windings and figure this out but if theres an easier way I'd rather not have to.

Thanks,

Logan

Electronically, the only difference between an OR80 and OR120 is two tube sockets. Everything else, including the trannys, are the same. OR80's should have only two output options as a result 8 and 16. You can visually observe inside the chassis whether the four ohm is connected or not.

Good to know, thank you. Yes, the 4 ohm is connected. I'll disconnect the 16 ohm (actually 32 ohms) and shift over the 4 and 8.

I have a Matamp-built OR80 that has visibly smaller, factory-installed transformers. So, there are some OR80s that have different transformers. For the most part, OR80s will have the same transformers as OR120s, but check pictures of what’s out there and see if your transformers look to be the big OR120 size. Also, some had the output transformer secondaries set correctly to compensate while some did not. The only constant to vintage Orange is inconsistency.
