Jim Root Dark Terror problem

Morning all,
New to this forum so I apologise in advance for any lapses in forum decorum... I should stick that in a song come to think of it.
Anyhow, got a Jim Root Dark terror and it has developed a problem. In 7 watt mode it has a big earth hum (which disappears when you touch the strings) and seems to have lost a lot of gain. this problem doesn't occur in 15 watt mode.
Now this is not the end of the world since I use 15 watt most of the time but it worries me that it is the start of a bigger problem. Anyone come across this before?
