amps with different amounts of gain stages in the amps themselves, will be out of phase with one another (odd number of gain stages versus even)
Ah yes, but this assumes that (with valve amps) that the output transformer is connected such that it doesn't give 180 degrees of phase shift itself.
Sometimes they are connected like that!
